Scope of Work: The landscape project involved reimagining the backyard as a series of connected, functional outdoor “rooms,” each offering a unique experience. The goal was to maximize the usable outdoor space without extensive grading while integrating design elements that fostered social interaction and relaxation. The final design created areas for grilling, dining, relaxing, and gathering around a firepit—all within a harmonious layout.

Existing Site Conditions: The backyard initially had two small decks connected by a walkway leading to the driveway. While these provided access to the yard, they were separate and didn’t lend themselves to larger gatherings or a natural flow between spaces. Additionally, there was no patio or designated outdoor entertainment area, leaving the space underutilized.

Challenges:

• Permitting Requirements: Navigating local permit regulations was a crucial part of the project. Ensuring compliance with town ordinances and zoning requirements was critical before any construction could begin.

• Maximizing Space Without Excessive Grading: The backyard’s slope meant that any design would have to consider the natural topography. Rather than engaging in extensive grading, the solution would need to integrate the existing elevation changes creatively to create functional, flat areas for seating and entertainment.

Design Solution: Our approach was to integrate multiple “outdoor rooms” that catered to various types of gatherings, all within a cohesive flow. By utilizing a tiered design, we were able to break up the backyard into distinct spaces without the need for large-scale grading.

Unifying the Decks: The two existing decks were combined into one continuous structure, connecting the two rear entrances of the home. This provided a larger space for relaxation, whether it’s enjoying a quiet morning coffee or hosting small gatherings. Trex composite decking was chosen for its durability and low-maintenance properties, ensuring the space would stand up to years of use with minimal upkeep.

Firepit Area – A Cozy Retreat: Tucked into a corner of the yard, a firepit area was designed as a focal point for evening gatherings. Surrounded by the property’s natural landscape, this spot offers an intimate space for guests to relax around a fire while still feeling connected to the rest of the backyard. This area is perfect for casual evenings with friends or more formal events, with the natural setting enhancing the overall ambiance.

First Patio – Grilling and Bar Area: A few steps down from the deck is the first patio area, specifically designed for grilling and serving. This space includes an outdoor kitchen, complete with a Techo-Bloc setup. The homeowners wanted a fully functional cooking space, so we installed a Green Egg grill, a griddle for versatile cooking, a refrigerator, and a trash drawer for convenience. The bar area provides ample seating, making this space ideal for casual meals, hosting cookouts, or simply enjoying a drink while cooking.

Second Patio – Dining and Socializing: Stepping down again, the second patio space opens up for dining. This area offers a larger seating arrangement, perfect for hosting family dinners, outdoor parties, or casual gatherings. The multi-tiered approach to the patio spaces not only maximized the usability of the backyard but also created a natural flow between each section, allowing guests to move seamlessly from one space to another.

Design Aesthetic and Key Features:

• Firepit: The firepit area serves as the perfect place for cozy evenings with friends and family, surrounded by the natural beauty of the landscape.

• Outdoor Kitchen: Equipped with premium materials from Techo-Bloc, the outdoor kitchen was designed to function as a complete cooking area. The Green Egg, griddle, refrigerator, and trash drawer ensure that everything the homeowners need is conveniently located outdoors, allowing for easy entertaining.

• Lighting: Bistro lighting was installed to add ambiance and warmth. It creates a soft, welcoming glow across the patio areas, making the space usable well into the evening.

• Decking: Trex composite decking was chosen for the unified deck due to its durability, resistance to weather, and low maintenance, ensuring the space will remain beautiful and functional for years to come.

• Tiered Patio Design: The tiered patio was key to making the most of the sloped landscape. By creating distinct levels, we were able to provide separate zones for grilling, dining, and relaxing, each with its own purpose while still feeling connected.

Challenges Overcome: The biggest challenge in this project was working within the existing slope without excessive grading. By introducing a tiered design, we maximized the usable space while maintaining the natural contours of the land. Navigating the permitting process was another hurdle, but our team ensured that all regulations were met, allowing the project to move forward without delays.

Embarking on a transformative journey, a family of five sought to reinvent their modest Needham backyard into a modern sanctuary—a place where cherished memories with loved ones would flourish. Their ambitious vision encompassed a multifaceted dream: a compact yet elegant pool and spa for rejuvenating summer swims and autumnal relaxation, a sleek gas fire pit for gatherings, and a versatile lounging area—all thoughtfully designed to conserve the expansive lawn for their children’s athletic endeavors.

To blend with their pre-existing outdoor kitchen grill island, we proposed a 9’ by 21’ inground plunge pool, complete with an integrated spa. This design not only aligned with the family’s modern tastes but also strategically utilized the space, preserving the lawn and adhering to local zoning regulations. The plunge pool’s modest dimensions represented an ideal balance, infusing luxury into the backyard without sacrificing the treasured play area.

A Key Collaboration: Communicating a Design Theme

Collaborating with Easton Pools, distinguished for its custom pool designs, we optimized the space to accommodate a plunge pool—a refined, space-efficient water feature ideal for compact areas. Plunge pools are typically sized from 13 to 23 feet in length and about 4 to 6 feet in depth, offering a cool sanctuary without the spatial demands of conventional pools. These pools are lauded for their straightforward upkeep and swift installation, making them an accessible luxury.

Easton Pools’ seasoned expertise and dedication to customization were instrumental in the installation, ensuring the process was tailored to the family’s desires. The plunge pool, measuring an elegant 9’ by 21’, includes a built-in spa, marrying the soothing comfort of a hot tub with the refreshing joy of a swim. The hot tub, adjoined to the pool, provides a cozy haven of warmth and tranquility.

The pool’s charm is further amplified by customizable RGB lighting, which bathes the water in a spectrum of hues, setting a magical scene that can be adjusted for any event or mood. This feature not only enhances the visual appeal but also adds to the sensory delight of the outdoor sanctuary.

Material Choice

Our landscape architectural plans offered a variety of choices regarding the pool’s placement and orientation, fire pit designs, and shade structure concepts. Prioritizing the preservation of green space, the homeowners opted for large, movable umbrellas instead of a fixed shade structure, providing adaptability as their children’s needs evolved. The option to introduce a permanent shade feature remains a future possibility.

The chosen fire pit, with its clean lines and rectilinear form, echoed the family’s preferences and functional needs. Materials were carefully selected to merge with the contemporary retreat envisioned, guiding homeowners in picking pavers, colors, and a distinctive block for the fire pit.

The selection of hardscape materials was pivotal in achieving the contemporary aesthetic of the landscape architectural design. Techo Bloc Para pavers were chosen for the pool decking, celebrated for their large-scale, ultra-smooth texture and fine lines characteristic of modern design. The fire pit was constructed using Techo Bloc Graphix blocks, known for their eye-catching ultra-modern double-sided design. Techo Bloc Raffinato was the material of choice for the pool coping, celebrated for its sleek and simple look.

Together, these Techo-Bloc products contributed significantly to the desired contemporary look, providing a harmonious blend of modern style and functional elegance. To infuse the space with unique character, minimalist single-spout water fountains were installed at the pool’s edge, cultivating a tranquil ambiance. The planting scheme featured Boxwoods, Karl Foerster Feather Reed grass, and Deep Pink Peonies, contributing to the area’s sleek and modern vibe.

The Importance of Proper Irrigation

Netafim drip irrigation lines were chosen for efficient and effective watering, particularly for new plantings, ensuring water efficiency, nutrient delivery, uniform application, energy saving, soil health, disease prevention, and adaptability.

The addition of bistro lights cast a warm glow above the fire pit, creating an inviting atmosphere for evening socials. A discreet, stand-up outdoor shower offered practicality and a touch of luxury to the comprehensive design.

This collaborative endeavor culminated in the creation of a custom modern haven, purposely aligned with the family’s aspirations and way of life. The transformed outdoor area now stands as a celebration of innovation, meticulous planning, and the relentless quest for a contemporary oasis destined to host many joyous occasions for years to come.
