A clear framework for the essential elements of a luxury outdoor living space: seamless entertaining, refined high-end landscaping, and durable comfort.

A luxury outdoor living space is not simply an expensive backyard. It is a place that works the way the best rooms inside a home do, with a clear sense of purpose, comfortable places to gather, and a finish that feels considered down to the last detail. When affluent homeowners begin planning an upscale outdoor renovation, the question we hear most often is some version of, “What actually belongs out here?” The answer is rarely about adding more. It is about choosing the right elements and arranging them so they work together.

At Land Design Associates, a professional landscape design firm based in Walpole, Massachusetts, we design outdoor spaces across Norfolk County, eastern Massachusetts, and the South Shore. Over many projects, a consistent framework has emerged for what separates a genuinely luxurious outdoor space from one that is merely well furnished. This guide walks through that framework so you can evaluate your own property and plan with confidence.

Luxury Starts With Cohesion, Not Cost

The single most important quality of a luxury outdoor living space is cohesion. Every element should feel like it belongs to the same composition, and the whole should feel connected to the architecture of the home. When a stone patio, a planting bed, a pergola, and a seating arrangement all relate to one another in scale, material, and color, the result reads as intentional and calm. When they do not, even the finest individual pieces can feel scattered.

This is why thoughtful outdoor space design is the foundation of any high-end project. Before selecting a single material or piece of furniture, it is worth establishing the organizing logic of the space: where you enter, how you move from one area to the next, what you see first, and where the eye comes to rest. Sight lines from the kitchen window and the main living room often set the framework for the entire design. Getting these relationships right is what allows a space to feel resolved rather than decorated.

A Patio or Terrace as the Foundation

Almost every luxury outdoor living space is built on a strong hardscape foundation, and the patio is usually where that begins. The patio is the floor of your outdoor rooms, and the material you choose sets the tone for everything else. Natural stone such as bluestone or granite, large-format porcelain pavers, and tightly fitted clay or stone units all read as refined when they are detailed well.

The best luxury patio ideas tend to share a few traits. They use generous, well-proportioned dimensions so furniture and circulation never feel cramped. They incorporate subtle changes in level or material to mark transitions between zones. And they pay close attention to the unglamorous fundamentals: proper base preparation, drainage, and grading that moves water away from the home. In New England, where freeze-and-thaw cycles are relentless, this groundwork is what keeps a beautiful patio looking beautiful for decades rather than heaving and cracking after a few winters.

Edges and borders deserve particular care. A clean stone border, a low seat wall, or a planted edge gives the patio a finished frame and helps it sit comfortably in the landscape rather than floating in the middle of a lawn.

Defined Outdoor Entertainment Areas

One of the clearest markers of a luxury space is that it does not try to be a single undifferentiated zone. Instead, it is organized into distinct outdoor entertainment areas, each with its own purpose. A dining area sits near the kitchen or grill. A lounge area gathers around a fire feature or a view. A quieter corner offers a place to read or have a private conversation. These zones can flow into one another, but each should feel like a room in its own right.

Defining these areas is partly about furniture and partly about the landscape itself. A change in paving, a low wall, a pergola overhead, or a band of planting can all signal that you have moved from one space to another. The goal is to give a large gathering natural places to spread out, while still feeling intimate when only a few people are present. The best outdoor entertainment areas accommodate both the dinner party of twenty and the quiet morning coffee for one.

The Outdoor Kitchen and Dining Zone

For homeowners who love to host, an outdoor kitchen transforms how a space is used. At the luxury level, this is more than a grill on a cart. It is a built-in cooking station with durable counter surfaces, storage, and often additional elements such as a side burner, a pizza oven, a beverage refrigerator, or a bar. The key is to keep the cook connected to guests rather than tucked away, so the kitchen becomes part of the gathering instead of a separate workstation.

The adjoining dining area should be sized honestly for the way you actually entertain. A table that comfortably seats your typical gathering, with room to walk around it, is far more valuable than an oversized table crammed into a tight footprint. Overhead structure, whether a pergola, a pavilion, or a mature shade tree, makes outdoor dining usable through more of the day and more of the season, which matters in our climate where comfort can change quickly from midday sun to evening cool.

A Focal Feature: Fire and Water

Luxury spaces almost always have a focal point that draws people in and gives the eye somewhere to settle. Fire and water are the two classic choices, and each does something different. A fire feature, whether a built-in fire pit or a more architectural gas fireplace, extends the usable season well into the cool New England evenings and creates a natural center of gravity for conversation. People orient themselves toward fire instinctively, which makes it one of the most effective ways to anchor a lounge area.

Water brings a different quality. A spill fountain, a reflecting basin, or a spa set into the hardscape adds movement, sound, and a sense of calm. The gentle white noise of moving water also softens road or neighbor sounds, which can make a space feel more private and serene. Some projects incorporate both, with fire and water placed in different zones so each area has its own character.

High-End Landscaping and Layered Plantings

No outdoor living space reaches the luxury level without the landscape itself doing real work. High-end landscaping is what makes a space feel established, lush, and connected to its setting rather than hard and bare. The most effective plantings are layered, combining canopy trees, understory and ornamental trees, shrubs, perennials, and groundcovers so that the planting has depth and reads as full from the first year.

Good planting design also pays attention to the calendar. In New England, a thoughtful palette delivers something in every season: spring bloom, summer fullness, fall color, and winter structure from evergreens and ornamental bark. This four-season interest is part of what makes high-end landscaping feel intentional, and it keeps the space looking considered even in the quieter months. Plantings are also one of the most powerful tools for shaping a space, framing views you want to keep, screening the ones you do not, and softening the edges where hardscape meets the rest of the property.

For coastal properties on the South Shore, in towns like Cohasset, Scituate, Marshfield, and Duxbury, plant selection takes on an added layer of practicality. Salt spray, wind, and sandy soils narrow the palette, and choosing species suited to these conditions is what keeps a coastal landscape thriving rather than struggling. Matching plants to the site is one of the quiet skills that separates a polished landscape from a disappointing one.

Lighting That Extends the Day

Lighting is one of the most undervalued elements of luxury outdoor living, and one of the most transformative. A well-designed space that goes dark at dusk is only half usable. Thoughtful lighting extends the evening, improves safety on steps and paths, and reveals the architecture of the landscape after sunset.

The best lighting design is layered, much like interior lighting. Path lights guide movement, downlighting from trees mimics natural moonlight, and uplighting on specimen trees, walls, and the home itself creates depth and drama. The fixtures themselves should largely disappear; what you notice is the effect rather than the source. Dimming and zoning give you control over the mood, so the same space can feel festive for a party or quiet for an evening alone. Lighting done well is what makes an outdoor living space feel like an extension of the home well after the sun has set.

Privacy, Shade, and Structure

Comfort outdoors depends heavily on a sense of enclosure. Few people relax fully in a space that feels exposed to the street or to neighbors. Luxury outdoor living spaces use structure and plantings to create privacy without feeling closed in. Pergolas and pavilions define overhead space and provide shade. Seat walls and planted screens create a sense of shelter at the edges. Layered plantings soften property lines and block unwanted sight lines while still allowing air and light to move through.

These structural elements also give the space architecture of its own. A well-proportioned pergola can frame a dining area, support climbing plants, and tie the outdoor rooms back to the materials and lines of the house. Structure is what gives an outdoor space the same sense of shelter and definition we expect from the rooms indoors.

Outdoor Furniture Selection

Furniture is where many outdoor projects either come together or fall apart. Careful outdoor furniture selection is essential because furniture is what people actually touch and sit in, and it carries a great deal of the comfort and the impression of quality. The two priorities are durability and proportion. Furniture must stand up to the climate, and it must be scaled correctly to the space.

For the South Shore and eastern Massachusetts, the most reliable materials include powder-coated aluminum, teak and other weather-resistant hardwoods, and all-weather wicker over rust-resistant frames. Cushions should use performance fabrics rated for fade and moisture resistance so they hold their color and dry quickly after a coastal fog or a summer storm. Beyond the materials, the pieces should be selected as part of the overall composition rather than purchased in isolation, so the colors, scale, and style relate to the hardscape and plantings. When furniture is chosen alongside the rest of the design, the space feels unified. When it is treated as a separate shopping trip at the end, it often feels like an afterthought.

Durable Comfort Is the Quiet Thread

If there is one idea that ties this framework together, it is durable comfort. Everything in a luxury outdoor living space should be both genuinely comfortable to use and built to last in the conditions of the site. A patio that drains properly, plantings suited to the soil and exposure, lighting that works year after year, and furniture that survives the seasons are what allow the space to keep delivering for many years. Luxury that does not hold up is not really luxury at all.

This is also why the order of operations matters. The investments that are hardest to change later, grading, drainage, hardscape, and the bones of the planting, are worth getting right first, even if the project is phased over time. Furnishings and finishing touches can be layered in as budget allows, but the foundation should be built to a standard that supports everything that comes after.

Bringing It Together Through Design

Each of these elements matters on its own, but the real value comes from how they are composed. That composition is the work of design. A thoughtful design process begins with how you want to live outdoors, evaluates the realities of your site, and resolves the relationships between the patio, the entertainment areas, the plantings, the lighting, and the furnishings before any construction begins. The result is a space that feels effortless precisely because so much thought went into it.

If you are planning an upscale outdoor renovation in Walpole, throughout Norfolk County, or across the South Shore and eastern Massachusetts, including Cohasset, Hingham, Duxbury, Marshfield, Scituate, Norwell, and Hanover, Land Design Associates would welcome the chance to help you shape a space that fits the way you live. As a professional landscape design firm, our role is to bring all of these elements into a single, cohesive design built for durable comfort and refined, seamless entertaining. Reach out to start a conversation about your property and what you would like your outdoor living space to become.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes an outdoor living space feel luxurious?

Luxury comes from cohesion and craftsmanship rather than expense alone. A luxury outdoor living space reads as a deliberate extension of the home, with defined zones for cooking, dining, and relaxing, high-quality materials that age well, layered landscaping, and lighting that lets the space be used after dark. The details feel resolved, and nothing looks added on as an afterthought.

What are the essential elements of a luxury outdoor living space?

The core elements are a well-built patio or terrace as the foundation, defined outdoor entertainment areas, an outdoor kitchen or dining zone, a focal feature such as a fire pit or water feature, layered high-end landscaping, integrated lighting, privacy and structure from elements like pergolas, and durable, comfortable outdoor furniture selected to suit the climate.

How much should I budget for a luxury outdoor living project?

Budgets vary widely with site conditions, materials, and scope. The most useful step is a design consultation that prioritizes the elements that matter most to how you live outdoors, then phases the work if needed. Building a strong foundation of grading, drainage, and hardscape first protects the investment in everything that follows.

What outdoor furniture holds up best in New England?

On the South Shore and across eastern Massachusetts, the most durable choices are powder-coated aluminum, teak, all-weather wicker over rust-resistant frames, and performance fabrics rated for fade and moisture resistance. Pieces should be scaled to the space and chosen alongside the hardscape and plantings so the whole composition feels intentional.

Explore the top outdoor living trends in Greater Boston for 2026, from outdoor rooms and plunge pools to lighting, planting, and smart design ideas built for New England homes.

If you’re thinking about upgrading your outdoor space in 2026, you’re not alone.

Across the Greater Boston area, homeowners are investing more than ever in their landscapes—not just for curb appeal, but to create functional outdoor living spaces that feel like an extension of the home.

But here’s the catch:
Not all “trends” are worth following.

The best outdoor spaces aren’t just trendy—they’re timeless, well-planned, and built to last in New England’s climate.

Here’s what we’re seeing right now—and how to approach these trends the right way.

1. Outdoor Spaces Designed Like Indoor Rooms

The biggest shift? Homeowners are no longer thinking in terms of patios—they’re thinking in terms of outdoor rooms.

Instead of one open space, we’re seeing:

Shine a Light on Your Landscape: Outdoor Lighting Benefits in Newton, Needham, Wellesley & Greater Boston Suburbs

Luxury backyard patio in Newton, MA with modern outdoor furniture, warm landscape lighting, and lush privacy hedges.

When the sun goes down, your outdoor living space doesn’t have to disappear into darkness. Professionally designed landscape lighting transforms your property into a warm, welcoming, and functional extension of your home—enhancing both beauty and value. Whether you live in Newton, Needham, Wellesley, Weston, Wayland, Westwood, Walpole, Dedham, Norwood, or anywhere in Norfolk County and the southwest Boston metro area, outdoor lighting offers benefits that go far beyond simply helping you see at night.

Highlight Your Home’s Best Features

Landscape lighting is the finishing touch that brings your property’s architecture and landscaping to life after sunset. Strategic placement of path lights, uplights, and accent lighting draws the eye to:

Architectural details like stonework, columns, and trim

Landscape features including ornamental trees, garden beds, and water features

Outdoor living spaces such as patios, pergolas, and fire pits

For example, a Wellesley home with elegant front columns can be transformed with uplighting that makes the entryway stand out. In Newton, a backyard koi pond can shimmer under soft, low-voltage lighting. These touches make your home look high-end and well cared for—day or night.

Extend Your Outdoor Living Hours

One of the biggest advantages of professional outdoor lighting is the ability to enjoy your yard well past sunset. Imagine:

Hosting dinner on the patio in Needham under a soft glow

Relaxing by the fire pit in Westwood late into the evening

Taking a peaceful stroll through a lit garden in Wayland

With proper design, outdoor lighting eliminates dark, unused corners and creates a comfortable, inviting atmosphere for both entertaining and quiet family time. The right lighting makes your yard feel like an extension of your living room—perfect for every season in New England.

A High-ROI Upgrade That Increases Home Value

Outdoor lighting is more than a style upgrade—it’s a smart investment. Industry research shows that professionally installed landscape lighting can increase a home’s perceived value by up to 15%. In competitive real estate markets like Newton, Needham, and Wellesley, a well-lit property stands out from the rest.

Potential buyers see a home that is both beautiful and secure, and they often associate outdoor lighting with high-quality maintenance and luxury living. In many cases, the cost of installation can be recouped—and even surpassed—when it’s time to sell.

Boost Curb Appeal and Safety

From a curb appeal standpoint, warm, layered lighting instantly elevates your property’s appearance. Even modest homes look elegant and upscale when illuminated correctly.

From a safety perspective, lighting is equally important:

Walkway lights prevent trips and falls

Driveway lights guide cars safely at night

Motion-activated lighting deters unwanted visitors

Well-lit entries increase security and peace of mind

For homeowners in Norfolk County and Boston suburbs, this combination of beauty and safety is a win-win.

Low-Maintenance, Energy-Efficient Lighting

Today’s LED outdoor lighting systems are built to last. Compared to traditional halogen bulbs, LEDs:

Use up to 80% less energy

Produce less heat, making them safer and more eco-friendly

Paired with smart lighting controls—including timers, dimmers, and app-based systems—you can create the perfect ambiance while keeping costs low.

Transform your Greater Boston home with a luxury outdoor kitchen. From grill islands to pizza ovens, discover how Land Design Associates can boost your home’s value by 2–2.5% while creating a stunning space to entertain.

In Greater Boston’s luxury home market, the competition for buyers is fierce—and it’s not just about square footage or bedroom count anymore. These days, luxury outdoor kitchens, complete with grill islands, fire pits, and even wood-fired pizza ovens, are one of the most sought-after home features.

Whether you’re in Newton, Needham, Wellesley, Dover, Westwood, or Walpole, a thoughtfully designed outdoor kitchen doesn’t just elevate your lifestyle—it can significantly increase your home’s resale value.

Outdoor Kitchens Are the “Hot” New Thing in Landscape Design

Outdoor kitchens have exploded in popularity across the Boston suburbs. At Land Design Associates, we’re seeing a huge demand from young families, empty nesters, and anyone who loves to entertain.

Imagine this:

You’re gathered with friends by the fire pit on a crisp fall evening.

Glass of wine in hand, the air is filled with the mouth-watering aroma of fresh pizza baking in your wood-fired oven.

Music drifts softly through the space, while landscape lighting highlights the stonework and plantings.

This isn’t just another patio—it’s a true outdoor living room. And according to industry data, adding a well-designed outdoor kitchen can increase a home’s value by 2–2.5%. In Boston’s $1M+ housing market, that can mean tens—or even hundreds—of thousands of dollars in added value.

Why Design Matters: The Landscape Architecture Advantage

A luxury outdoor kitchen isn’t just a collection of appliances plunked on a patio—it’s a designed experience. The way the space is laid out, the materials used, and the integration with the rest of the landscape all determine how people feel when they use it.

Key design elements that make the difference:

1. Proportion and Flow

The kitchen should feel “just right”—not oversized and overwhelming, and not cramped and awkward. Placement matters, too; the cooking area should connect seamlessly to the dining and lounging zones without creating bottlenecks.

2. Material Selection

Flooring: Large-format pavers in natural tones create a relaxed, sophisticated feel.

Stonework: Beautiful masonry work on grill islands and fireplaces showcases craftsmanship and elevates the space’s style.

Countertops: Polished granite in a darker tone is both durable and easy to clean, keeping your kitchen looking fresh.

3. Furniture & Plantings

Furniture should be stylish yet comfortable, complementing rather than competing with the space. Container plants and integrated greenery add warmth and soften the hardscape.

4. Fire Features

A fire pit or fireplace extends the season well into late fall. https://hpcfire.com/ Gas units are convenient and low-maintenance, while wood-burning options bring an authentic, rustic charm. https://www.napoleon.com/en/us/grills

5. Distant Focal Points

Including a visual anchor—like a pergola with a swing, a sculpture, or a lit water feature—draws the eye outward and makes the entire outdoor space feel larger.

The Pizza Oven Factor

While grills remain the centerpiece of most outdoor kitchens, pizza ovens are quickly becoming the ultimate status symbol. They’re not only fun and interactive but also versatile, capable of roasting vegetables, baking bread, or even searing steaks.

In the Boston luxury market, a pizza oven:

Signals a high-end, custom-built outdoor space.

Makes the home stand out in real estate listings.

Appeals to the growing foodie culture among buyers.

How Much Value Can It Add?

Here’s where it gets exciting. Let’s run some numbers for a typical Boston-area luxury home:

Average home value: $1M+ in many desirable suburbs.

Industry increase from a well-designed outdoor kitchen: 2–2.5%

Added resale value: $20,000–$25,000 per $1M in home value (and much more in higher-priced markets).

For higher-end properties, that number can skyrocket. In some cases, homeowners have seen increases of $200,000–$300,000 when the outdoor kitchen is part of a larger, fully integrated luxury landscape design.

Cost vs. ROI:

Average high-end outdoor kitchen investment: $75,000.

Potential ROI: 3–5x the cost in added home value.

Plus, years of enjoyment before you sell.

In other words, it’s one of the few home upgrades that can pay for itself many times over while also improving your day-to-day lifestyle.

Why Boston Buyers Love Outdoor Kitchens

In our local market, today’s buyers are looking for move-in ready luxury. They don’t want to take on big renovation projects after closing.

When they see a home with a fully built, well-designed outdoor kitchen, they know:

They can start entertaining right away.

The design has been professionally executed to maximize comfort and usability.

The feature will add prestige and enjoyment to their home life.

For sellers, that means your property jumps to the top of a buyer’s shortlist—and often sells faster and for more money.

Client Consultation & Initial Assessment

The design process began with an in-depth client consultation. At Land Design Associates, we believe collaboration is the key to success. During our meeting, we:

The Design Solution & Execution

Reimagined Garden Bed Layouts

We reshaped the landscape beds to flow more naturally with the architecture of the home. By repositioning existing plants and introducing new ones, we created a layered, balanced effect that adds depth and visual interest.

Plant Selection: Color, Texture & Sustainability

We carefully curated a plant palette to deliver year-round vibrancy while thriving in the local New England climate. Our approach included:

Native plants for resilience and ecological benefits

This not only satisfied the client’s goals but also aligned with our philosophy of sustainable, environmentally responsible design.

Adding a Shade Garden

An underutilized shady corner of the property was transformed into a lush shade garden featuring ferns, hostas, and evergreen shrubs. This created a serene retreat and ensured year-round greenery in what was once a neglected area.

Landscape Lighting Design

To extend enjoyment of the space into the evening, we implemented a professional landscape lighting plan. Using uplighting and accent fixtures, we highlighted:

Final Outcome: A Cohesive, Vibrant Outdoor Environment

The transformation was dramatic. The redesigned beds now display:

Full, layered plantings with vibrant seasonal color

Strategic lighting that enhances beauty and usability after sunset

Improved curb appeal and property value

The clients were thrilled with the final result, noting how the space now feels both welcoming and cohesive.

Why Landscape Bed Redesign Matters

A well-executed landscape bed redesign is more than just planting flowers. It delivers long-term value by:

This project, located in Dedham, Massachusetts, presented a unique set of challenges. The clients had a long wish list for their outdoor space, including a pool, pool house, hot tub, outdoor kitchen, gas fire pit, landscape lighting, and privacy plantings—all to be installed in a relatively small backyard. Adding to the complexity, the project needed to comply with strict guidelines from the local conservation committee. These guidelines required that no additional stormwater runoff could be generated by the installation. As a result, every drop of rainwater landing on the new hardscapes had to be captured and managed on-site. With such limitations, creativity and technical precision were critical at every stage of the design.

Client Wishlist and Initial Landscape Condition: The existing landscape was essentially a blank canvas—a common scenario in newly developed neighborhoods. The contractor who built the home had planted a simple lawn with minimal foundation plantings, leaving the space underutilized and lacking character. This provided us with the freedom to design from scratch but also required an innovative approach to meet the client’s vision while adhering to the conservation committee’s stringent requirements.

The client’s vision for the backyard was ambitious, encompassing a wide range of outdoor amenities, all within a limited space. These included:

A pool with a sun shelf

A hot tub

A custom U-shaped outdoor kitchen and grill island

A gas fire pit

Landscape lighting

Privacy plantings to create a secluded outdoor retreat

Addressing Conservation Committee Requirements: To meet the conservation committee’s guidelines, we collaborated with drainage engineers to manage all stormwater runoff on-site. This was achieved using Cultec drywells, which are underground chambers designed to collect and infiltrate rainwater back into the soil. These systems allow water to naturally percolate into the ground, reducing runoff and preventing surface flooding.

We utilized an existing Cultec drywell in the front yard to handle part of the runoff, and installed a larger system in the backyard. Patio drains were routed to this new drywell, ensuring all water from the hardscape—such as the patio and pool deck—was captured and managed in compliance with regulations. This sustainable solution not only mitigated stormwater but also recharged groundwater, addressing both environmental and regulatory concerns.

Key Features of the Project:

Porcelain Paver Patio: One of the standout elements of this landscape design is the use of porcelain pavers for the pool deck and patio areas. Porcelain is an increasingly popular material for outdoor applications, thanks to its durability, aesthetic appeal, and heat resistance. Unlike natural stone or concrete pavers, porcelain remains cooler to the touch under direct sunlight, making it an excellent choice for poolside applications. Additionally, it offers a price point that falls between concrete pavers and high-end natural stone like bluestone or granite, making it an attractive option for both functionality and budget.

Custom U-Shaped Grill Island: The outdoor kitchen is a focal point of the backyard, featuring a custom-built U-shaped grill island. This design not only maximizes functionality for the chef but also enhances the social aspect of the space. Friends and family can comfortably sit at the bar-style seating around the grill, allowing the host to interact with guests while preparing meals. The island’s positioning also provides an excellent view of the pool, creating a cohesive entertainment zone.

Boulder Retaining Wall: To maximize the usable space in the backyard, we installed a stunning boulder retaining wall. This feature not only served an aesthetic purpose but also addressed a functional challenge posed by the existing grade of the landscape. The natural slope of the yard limited the amount of flat, usable space, so by incorporating a boulder wall, we were able to expand the level area and create more room for the pool, hot tub, and surrounding patio. The large, natural stones blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment and lend a rugged, yet elegant, character to the backyard. This approach also helped manage erosion and water flow, further enhancing the project’s stormwater management system.

Pool with Sun Shelf: The pool includes a luxurious sun shelf—a shallow area perfect for lounging and cooling off on hot days without fully submerging in the water. This feature adds an element of resort-like relaxation to the space and is especially popular for families with children or those who enjoy sunbathing.

Front Yard Design for Curb Appeal: While the backyard was the primary focus of this project, the front yard was also transformed to enhance the home’s curb appeal and create a welcoming entrance. A stunning freestanding stone wall, complete with an address block and under-cap lighting, serves as a statement feature. This wall not only defines the property’s boundary but also adds a touch of elegance that can be appreciated day or night.

A generously sized paver walkway was installed to connect the front landing to the driveway and street, offering both functionality and visual appeal. In the landscape beds, a mix of evergreens, hydrangeas, perennials, and ornamental grasses was chosen to ensure multi-season interest. The evergreens provide structure and color in the winter months, while the flowering plants and grasses create texture and vibrant hues during spring and summer.

This Dedham project is a testament to the power of thoughtful design and engineering. Despite the challenges posed by the conservation committee’s restrictions and the tight space, we were able to create a beautiful and functional outdoor space that exceeded the client’s expectations. By leveraging creative design solutions, such as the custom grill island, boulder retaining wall, and porcelain pavers, alongside careful stormwater management planning, we transformed a blank slate into a stunning, multifunctional landscape. The result is a private, luxurious outdoor retreat that blends seamlessly with the natural surroundings and complies with all regulatory guidelines.

This Medfield home presented a unique challenge due to its location on a steep slope, which rendered much of the backyard space unusable. The homeowners, a young family with a desire to create a functional and inviting outdoor area, envisioned installing a large pool for their children and for entertaining friends and family.

Challenge: Slope and Usability

The primary obstacle was overcoming the steep slope while maintaining both functionality and aesthetic appeal. The design process required a thoughtful approach, ensuring that the natural contours of the yard were used to their advantage. To address this, a tiered layout was developed to break the slope into manageable, leveled sections. This method not only mitigated the drastic elevation changes but also created ample room for the various amenities desired by the homeowners.

Solution: Tiered Retaining Walls

To execute this vision, tiered retaining walls were incorporated into the design. These walls served multiple purposes: they helped manage the slope, provided essential structural support, and allowed for a seamless transition between different levels. The retaining walls also created distinct, usable zones within the yard, with walkways connecting the upper sections of the property to the new pool area. The result was a graceful flow between the main points of access, enhancing both functionality and the visual appeal of the space.

Central Feature: The Pool

The centerpiece of the design was the in-ground gunite pool, strategically positioned on the middle tier. This placement offered several advantages, including enhanced privacy by better screening the pool from the road and aligning it with the deck steps for easy access. The pool was surrounded by a generous patio, providing ample space for lounging, sunbathing, and entertaining guests.

Seamless Integration: Connecting the New and Existing Patios

One of the design highlights was the seamless connection between the newly added pool patio area and the existing patio adjacent to the home. The existing patio, which previously felt disconnected from the steep backyard, was now integrated into the overall design. The new tiered layout allowed for a natural transition from the home’s existing patio down to the new pool area. A series of wide, welcoming steps and a beautifully paved walkway linked the two spaces, encouraging flow and movement between them.

This connection not only maximized the usability of the entire backyard but also allowed the homeowners to enjoy a cohesive outdoor experience. The two patios could now be used together for larger gatherings or separately for more intimate settings. The combined patio spaces also provided multiple vantage points to enjoy the landscape, whether lounging by the pool or dining near the house.

Abundant Plantings for Beauty and Privacy

To soften the hardscapes and add lush beauty to the design, a variety of carefully selected plantings were incorporated throughout the space. Hydrangeas, with their vibrant and voluminous blooms, were chosen to bring bursts of color to the landscape, particularly around the pool area and along the retaining walls. Ornamental grasses added texture and movement, their swaying plumes providing a graceful contrast to the structured elements of the design. Summer sweet (Clethra alnifolia) was also included for its fragrant, bee-friendly blooms that thrive in the New England climate.

In addition to these ornamental plants, a row of evergreens was strategically placed along the perimeter of the pool area, providing natural privacy from the nearby road. These evergreens acted as a living screen, ensuring that the pool remained a secluded oasis while also contributing to the year-round greenery and beauty of the yard. The combination of these plantings not only enhanced the visual appeal but also created a sense of enclosure and tranquility within the outdoor space.

Enhanced Ambiance with Path Lighting and Tree Uplighting

To further elevate the design and ensure the backyard could be enjoyed day and night, outdoor lighting was incorporated throughout the space. Path lighting was added along the walkways leading from the existing patio to the pool, as well as around the pool area itself. These subtle, low-voltage lights not only provided safe passage after dark but also added a warm, welcoming glow to the entire yard, enhancing the ambiance for evening gatherings and nighttime swims.

In addition to the path lighting, bullet uplighting was strategically placed to illuminate the property’s most prominent trees. These lights cast dramatic upward beams, highlighting the trees’ textures and shapes while adding depth and dimension to the nightscape. The combination of soft path lighting and the more focused uplighting created a balanced, layered lighting design that not only improved safety but also accentuated the beauty of the landscape after sunset.

Supporting Features

In addition to the pool, plantings, and lighting, several complementary elements were carefully integrated into the overall layout. A pool house was constructed for convenient storage of equipment and accessories, while the tiered walkways allowed for easy movement between the different levels of the yard. Safety was prioritized with the inclusion of a well-placed fence, designed to follow the contours of the terraced yard without compromising the open and inviting feel of the space.

Final Result: A Functional and Beautiful Outdoor Oasis

Through careful planning and a tiered design approach, the previously unusable backyard was transformed into a functional and beautiful outdoor oasis. The design successfully addressed the challenges posed by the steep slope while creating a family-friendly space that met the homeowners’ vision for both recreation and entertainment. The seamless integration of the new pool patio with the existing patio, along with the use of abundant plantings and outdoor lighting, further enhanced the usability, safety, and beauty of the space—making it a versatile and stunning area to enjoy both day and night.

In 2024, several landscaping trends are proving particularly effective at achieving these goals. Here, we’ll explore some of the top trends that landscape architects are using to help homeowners maximize their property’s value.

1. Sustainable Landscape Architecture

Sustainability has become a cornerstone of modern landscape architecture. Homebuyers are increasingly looking for properties that reflect environmental consciousness, and sustainable landscaping practices are a great way to showcase this. Landscape architects are incorporating native plants that require less water and are more resistant to local pests, reducing the need for chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Additionally, rain gardens, which collect and filter stormwater runoff, are becoming popular. These gardens not only protect water quality but also add a unique aesthetic element to the landscape.

By working with a landscape architectural designer to integrate sustainable design elements, homeowners can enjoy a beautiful garden while also knowing they are contributing to a healthier environment. This environmentally-friendly approach is appealing to buyers who are conscious of their carbon footprint, thereby increasing the property’s market value.

2. Outdoor Living Spaces

One of the most notable trends in landscape architecture that adds value to a home is the creation of outdoor living spaces. In 2024, the emphasis is on designing multifunctional areas that extend the indoor living experience outdoors. This includes outdoor kitchens, dining areas, fire pits, and even outdoor movie theaters. These spaces are designed by landscape architects to be seamlessly integrated into the natural surroundings, using materials that complement the home’s architecture and landscape.

Outdoor living spaces are highly desirable for potential buyers who view them as an extension of the home’s usable space. A well-designed outdoor area can make a property stand out in the real estate market, offering a unique selling point that increases its value. By hiring a skilled landscape architectural designer to envision these spaces, homeowners can ensure that their outdoor areas are both functional and visually appealing.

3. Smart Landscaping Technology

The integration of smart technology into landscape architecture is another trend gaining momentum in 2024. Smart irrigation systems, for example, can significantly reduce water usage by adjusting watering schedules based on weather conditions and soil moisture levels. These systems are not only efficient but also environmentally friendly, aligning with the growing demand for sustainable living solutions.

Additionally, landscape architects are incorporating smart lighting solutions that enhance security and ambiance. With features like motion sensors and timers, these lighting systems provide homeowners with convenience and peace of mind while adding a stylish element to the landscape. Smart landscaping technology appeals to tech-savvy buyers who value the convenience and efficiency of modern home innovations, further increasing property value.

4. Edible Gardens and Urban Farming

Edible gardens and urban farming are becoming increasingly popular as homeowners look to make the most of their outdoor spaces. Landscape architects are creatively incorporating vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and herb gardens into their designs, blending functionality with aesthetics. This trend not only provides homeowners with fresh produce but also creates a unique selling feature that can enhance a property’s appeal.

Urban farming is particularly attractive to buyers who are interested in self-sufficiency and sustainability. A well-designed edible garden can serve as a major selling point, especially in urban areas where space is limited. By working with a landscape architect to design these gardens, homeowners can create a productive and visually pleasing space that appeals to a wide range of buyers.

5. Water Features and Low-Maintenance Landscaping

Water features such as ponds, waterfalls, and fountains continue to be popular elements in landscape architecture. They add a sense of tranquility and luxury to any garden, making them highly attractive to potential buyers. In 2024, the trend is moving towards low-maintenance water features that use recycled water systems, aligning with the sustainable landscaping trend.

Moreover, low-maintenance landscaping is becoming increasingly popular among homeowners who want beautiful outdoor spaces without the burden of constant upkeep. Landscape architects are incorporating elements like gravel gardens, drought-resistant plants, and automated irrigation systems to create stunning, low-maintenance landscapes that appeal to busy homeowners and retirees alike.

6. Hardscaping and Modern Aesthetics

Hardscaping elements, such as patios, walkways, retaining walls, and decorative stonework, are becoming more sophisticated and modern in 2024. Landscape architectural designers are using clean lines, minimalist styles, and contemporary materials like concrete, steel, and glass to create sleek, modern outdoor spaces. These hardscaping elements provide structure and definition to a landscape, making it both functional and visually appealing.

Modern hardscaping can significantly enhance the overall aesthetic of a property, making it more attractive to potential buyers. A well-designed hardscape not only boosts curb appeal but also adds usable outdoor space, further increasing home value. By investing in professional landscape architectural design, homeowners can ensure that their hardscape elements are both durable and stylish.

One of the primary benefits of adding a patio or other hardscape elements, like walkways and retaining walls, is the creation of additional usable space. A landscape patio extends the living area of a home outdoors, providing a place for dining, entertaining, or simply relaxing. This additional space can be a major selling point for potential buyers who envision themselves enjoying an expanded lifestyle that incorporates outdoor living. By hiring a landscape architectural designer to create these areas, homeowners can ensure that their patios and hardscapes are both functional and visually appealing, tailored to their specific needs and preferences.

Hardscapes are key elements in defining the overall aesthetic of a landscape. A well-designed patio can serve as a focal point in a backyard, drawing attention and creating a sense of harmony between the home and its natural surroundings. Walkways can guide visitors through a garden, while retaining walls can add depth and dimension to sloped areas. By using high-quality materials and thoughtful design, landscape architects can create hardscapes that complement the home’s architecture and enhance the property’s overall curb appeal. This aesthetic boost not only makes the home more attractive but also helps it stand out in a competitive real estate market, potentially increasing its value.

Unlike other landscape elements that may require regular upkeep, such as lawns or gardens, hardscapes are typically low maintenance and highly durable. Patios made from materials like stone, brick, or concrete can withstand the elements and require minimal maintenance, making them an attractive option for busy homeowners or those who prefer a low-maintenance lifestyle. The durability of these materials means they will last for many years, providing a lasting investment that enhances property value over time. Additionally, because hardscapes are often considered a permanent improvement to the property, they can positively impact the appraisal value when selling a home.

Hardscapes also provide practical benefits that enhance the functionality and safety of outdoor spaces. For instance, retaining walls can prevent soil erosion and manage water runoff, protecting the property’s foundation and landscaping. Patios and pathways create stable, even surfaces for walking and outdoor activities, reducing the risk of slips and falls. By incorporating hardscapes into a landscape design, homeowners can create a safer and more functional outdoor environment that appeals to a broad range of potential buyers.

Backyard patios and other hardscapes offer substantial value to homeowners by increasing usable space, enhancing aesthetic appeal, providing low-maintenance solutions, and improving functionality and safety. These features, designed and implemented by a skilled landscape architectural designer, not only enrich the homeowner’s outdoor living experience but also significantly boost the property’s market value, making them a wise investment for any home.

Investing in landscape architectural design is one of the most effective ways to enhance your home’s value. In 2024, trends such as sustainable landscaping, outdoor living spaces, smart technology, edible gardens, water features, and modern hardscaping are leading the way in boosting property appeal and market value. By working with a skilled landscape designer, homeowners can transform their outdoor spaces into beautiful, functional, and valuable assets. Whether you’re planning to sell your home soon or simply want to enjoy a stunning outdoor environment, these trends in landscape architecture offer a roadmap to achieving your goals.

The homeowners wanted to transform their sloped backyard into a breathtaking outdoor sanctuary. With a desire to fuse leisure, entertainment, and ample play space for their children, the homeowners embarked on a journey to mold their vision into reality. They aspired to craft an inviting expanse that seamlessly melded with family-centric elements, all while navigating the challenges posed by the natural incline of the terrain.

Envisioning a versatile outdoor haven, the clients articulated their dream space with clarity. They hoped to include the following elements:

Inground Pool: A large pool destined for play and relaxation during the summer months.

Waterfall Feature: An aesthetically pleasing water cascade to augment the allure of the pool area, infusing it with the tranquil symphony of flowing water.

Gas Fire Pit: A snug alcove for evening rendezvous, providing warmth and ambiance sans the arduous task of tending to a wood fire, especially pertinent for their young family.

Raised Platform: An elevated patio for basking in the sun’s warmth or reclining in the shade, strategically positioned adjacent to the pool.

Raised Spa: A lavish addition seamlessly integrated into the pool vicinity, offering indulgent relaxation even beyond the sweltering days of summer.

Lawn Space: An ample expanse for the children to play soccer and frisbee, preserving a portion of the existing slope to double as thrilling sledding terrain.

Landscape Design Solutions to Sloped Backyard

The predominant challenge revolved around the inherent slope of the backyard. Crafting a design that harmonized with the undulating topography while accommodating the desired amenities posed a formidable task. Striving for a symbiotic blend of functionality and aesthetics was imperative, ensuring that no aspect of the design felt compromised amidst the natural contours of the land.

A secondary hurdle arose from the stringent town regulations governing impervious surface areas. Balancing the client’s aspirations with municipal mandates necessitated meticulous attention to drainage management and water control. The design intricacies delved into adeptly orchestrating water flow and storage solutions to meet the town’s requirements, all while upholding the integrity of the envisioned landscape.

The proposed multi-purpose retaining wall served as a pivotal element in mitigating the challenges posed by the sloped terrain. Beyond its functional role in supporting grade changes, the wall was ingeniously conceived to double as a seamless seating arrangement, fostering intimate gatherings around the fire feature space. Its integration into the landscape design not only addressed practical needs but also contributed to the aesthetic cohesion of the outdoor retreat.

Inground Pool with a Sheet Waterfall

Strategically nestled within the lower terrace, the inground pool emerged as the pièce de résistance, exuding an aura of serenity and sophistication. Enhanced by the mesmerizing waterfall, the pool area became the gravitational center of the landscape, enticing homeowners and visitors alike to bask in its tranquil allure. This focal point not only offered respite from the summer heat but also elevated the visual appeal of the entire outdoor environment.

Backyard Fire Pit Provides a Place to Gather with Family and Friends

Thoughtfully positioned adjacent to the pool’s far side, the gas fire pit transcended its utilitarian function to become a magnetic nexus for convivial gatherings. Capitalizing on the natural slope, the fire pit was ingeniously flanked by a built-in seating wall, fostering an ambiance of warmth and camaraderie. The raised plantings adorning the wall further augmented the coziness of the space, accentuating its allure as a cherished focal point under the evening sky.

Elevating the outdoor living experience, the meticulously designed raised platform offered a vantage point to relax and enjoy the backyard. Positioned in symmetrical harmony with the raised spa, this elevated oasis provided an idyllic retreat for basking in the sun. Its strategic orientation towards the south ensured optimal sun exposure, inviting moments of leisure and relaxation amidst the verdant landscape.

As a seamless extension of the pool structure, the raised spa epitomized opulence and symmetry. Its incorporation into the design not only offered a luxurious sanctuary for late-season indulgence but also lent a sense of equilibrium to the overall composition. Mirroring the inground pool’s elegance, the raised spa added a touch of refinement to the landscape, further elevating its allure as a haven of rejuvenation.

Soft Backyard Lawn Greens Up the Property

Completing the harmonious ensemble, expansive lawn spaces and verdant planting beds infused the landscape with vitality and warmth. Carefully curated to soften the hardscape elements, these green spaces not only provided ample play areas for the children but also bestowed a sense of privacy and tranquility. Seamlessly integrated into the design, these sanctuaries created a luxurious retreat nestled within nature’s embrace.

Backyard Lighting Extends Use of Outdoor Spaces

Meticulous attention to lighting design illuminated the landscape with a captivating allure, ensuring safety while infusing the ambiance with a subtle, enchanting glow. From pathways to key focal points, every aspect was carefully illuminated to extend the usability of the space well into the evening hours. The lighting design added depth and dimension to the yard, accentuating its inherent beauty and fostering an inviting atmosphere for continued enjoyment under the moonlit sky.

Low voltage landscape lighting offers many benefits, making it a popular choice for outdoor illumination. Firstly, it is incredibly energy-efficient, consuming significantly less electricity compared to traditional high voltage systems, resulting in cost savings over time. Additionally, low voltage systems are safer to install and use, reducing the risk of electrical shock, particularly in damp outdoor environments. Their versatility allows for easy customization and adjustment, enabling homeowners to highlight specific landscape features or create various lighting effects to enhance the aesthetic appeal of their outdoor spaces. Moreover, low voltage fixtures are typically durable and long-lasting, requiring minimal maintenance while still providing reliable illumination throughout the year. Lastly, they contribute to sustainability efforts by minimizing energy consumption and reducing light pollution, preserving the natural beauty of the nighttime landscape. Overall, low voltage landscape lighting combines efficiency, safety, versatility, and sustainability, making it an ideal choice for enhancing outdoor environments.

Drainage Solutions Rectified

Addressing the imperative of town regulations, a comprehensive drainage system was designed and installed to manage water runoff effectively. Utilizing Cultec dry well chambers discreetly nestled within the site, the system adeptly collected and stored water, alleviating concerns while preserving the integrity of the landscape design. This innovative solution exemplified a commitment to both regulatory compliance and client satisfaction, ensuring that the envisioned oasis could be realized without compromise.

The realization of the design concept demanded precision and finesse, particularly in navigating the challenges posed by the sloped terrain. Skilled craftsmanship and meticulous planning characterized every stage of the construction process, from the engineering of retaining walls to the seamless integration of hardscape and softscape elements. The expertise and dedication of the construction team culminated in the transformation of the backyard, bringing the envisioned oasis to life with unparalleled excellence.

Through landscape architectural planning and expert craftsmanship, the backyard was transformed and surpassed the clients’ wildest dreams. From the tranquil oasis of the inground pool to the inviting warmth of the gas fire pit, every element harmonized seamlessly within the landscape. The redesigned space not only met but exceeded the clients’ expectations, delivering a luxurious yet family-friendly retreat that beckons for endless moments of relaxation, entertainment, and cherished memories.

In the town of Medfield, Massachusetts, this landscape project stands as a testament to the transformative power of visionary design and meticulous execution. Against the backdrop of a sloped terrain and regulatory constraints, creativity and expertise converged to fashion a haven of unparalleled beauty and functionality. This resplendent outdoor sanctuary epitomizes the artistry and ingenuity required to transcend challenges, turning adversity into opportunity and crafting an enduring legacy of timeless elegance and familial bliss.

Site Overview and Analysis

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in people all over the world spending more time than ever at their homes and in their backyards. People passed the time doing all sorts of new outdoor activities such as golfing, cycling, pickleball, and gardening. One client of Land Design Associates decided to take on a project he was certain would be challenging, rewarding, and keep him outside all spring and summer.

In his woodland lot off of Dela Park Road in Westwood, MA, our client Jason took on the arduous task of removing all of the understory vegetation that surrounded the massive canopy trees sprawling across his 350’ x 70’ parcel of land. By hand, Jason spent months freeing the mature Red Maples and Oak trees from the suffocating Bittersweet vines and Japanese knotweed that had been inhabiting the lot. In September of 2020, Jason finished the backbreaking brush clearing and decided the time had come to schedule a design consultation with Land Design Associates to explore how to maximize the open space he had created.

Understanding the Site and It’s Challenges

On an Autumn morning, Jim Egan, the owner of Land Design Associates, walked the site with Jason and reviewed the existing challenges and opportunities and discussed some preliminary design ideas. The first challenge was the presence of a wetland in the abutting property. As anyone who lives near a wetland can tell you, the setbacks that come with them can inhibit the implementation of certain projects. It was determined that at the end of the design phase, we would present the master plan to the Westwood Conservation Agency to get their approval for the installation. The second challenge was the sheer size of the space. Jason wasn’t exactly sure how he wanted to use the space, but he wanted to ensure that whatever was done would not only be beautiful, but would help to keep back the aggressive and invasive vegetation he had spent countless hours removing. We were confident that following standard landscape construction practices, including grubbing out the roots of the old vegetation and supplying the new plantings with an organically rich growing medium, would keep the old invasive plants at bay. The third challenge Jason highlighted was that the 350’ long lot bordered a popular street for walking and bike riding. With no clear markings that the once heavily forested lot was indeed private property, local teenagers had mistaken it for public land to be used at any time of their choosing, day or night. A sense of privacy and delineation of public and private land is a common request from the clients working with Land Design Associates. Jason was excited about the prospect of using land formation and new plantings to transform the open woodland lot into a private oasis.

With the unique challenges and corresponding goals of the project outlined, the design team at Land Design Associates began working on the first design concepts to present to the client. Jason was excellent to work with because he had complete trust in the design team and he had intimate knowledge of the site which helped to identify the potential strengths and weaknesses of the different areas. At the end of the collaborative design experience, Jason was thrilled with the final plan and all parties were ready to present it to the Westwood Conservation Commission. The Commission gave Land Design Associates the full go ahead to start implementing the major landscape construction project. They outlined the rules and regulations to follow during and after the installation to ensure the continued protection of the wetland. Finally in March of 2021, 5 months after the initial design consultation with Jason, Land Design Associates broke ground on the Westwood site.

From Concept to Construction

The landscape construction lasted the majority of the spring and summer. The early months were largely spent grading and building boulder walls. These steps were essential in implementing grade change to the future sand pathway system we would install. The pathways connect the different rooms in the garden, and in the winter months they act as a beautiful cross country skiing route.

Tree pruning and planting privacy screening trees were two other important early steps in construction. Due to the wetland bordering the eastern part of the site, as well as 350’ of impervious asphalt road pitching to the western part of the site, water was omnipresent and its treatment was imperative to the success of the project. The mature canopy trees scattered across the site added an invaluable asset to the landscape, but they also provided heavy shade to the forest floor. By pruning all of the dead wood from these trees, as well as thinning out some of the particularly dense canopies, we were able to greatly increase the amount of sun the site receives throughout the day. This helped to mitigate standing water on the property and also increased the variety of plants we could confidently install during the planting phase. The privacy plants on the borders of the property were the first trees we installed. These trees consisted of Western Red Cedars, Norway Spruce, Eastern White Pines, and Canadian Hemlocks. The variety of trees provide a natural feel to the finished garden and the location of them provided immediate privacy from pedestrians on Dela Park road as well as neighboring houses along the eastern property line.

Seemly Connection

The next major steps in the construction process were installing the sand pathway system and building a fire pit that would fit in harmoniously with the woodland surroundings. The sand was chosen as the primary material for the pathways for several reasons. It of course drains extremely well, so the wet surroundings would not pose a problem. Sand is also a relatively inexpensive material and is quick to install. With 4000 square feet of pathways, it was important to keep the material costs down. Lastly, walking on and even raking out sand can be very relaxing. As soon as Jason and his family enter the woodland garden from their backyard, the transition to a sand pathway identifies they’ve come to a peaceful and private landscape.

The grand woodland fire pit area is the first space Jason and his family encounter upon entering the garden. One reason that specific location was chosen for the fire pit is because of the layout of the existing canopy trees in the area. The trees form a natural circle around the space, and by installing large groupings of Rosebay Rhododendrons, native ferns, and Summersweet shrubs, we were able to accentuate the existing circular form. Large boulders were installed to create a natural buffer between the gathering area and the surrounding plantings, and these boulders make excellent chairs as well. At the center of the space, smaller boulders surround a 5’ diameter steel fire pit ring. The fire pit and the entire fire pit area blend in seamlessly with the adjacent undisturbed wetlands to the east.

Planting and Lighting

Once the pathway system and fire pit area were finished, we were able to focus our efforts on installing landscape lighting, a wildflower meadow, a grass pathway system to provide an alternative walking experience to the sand, and flowering trees, shrubs, and perennials. Last but not least came the all-important irrigation system to help guarantee the success of all the hard work by our installation crews.

The landscape lighting system consists of path lights to highlight the beautiful sand and grass pathways, up lights to showcase both new and existing trees, and downlights which are used to cast soft light on large areas like the fire pit and wildflower meadow.

The grass pathway system and the wildflower meadow are located in the part of the woodland garden which receives the most direct sunlight. In addition to spreading a native wildflower seed mix, we planted a mix of 100 perennials including Shasta Daisies, Black Eyed Susan, and Purple Coneflower to ensure the meadow had a mature look before the seed germinated.

The approximately 700 remaining perennials, 100 shrubs, and 20 deciduous trees from the planting plan were carefully planted within the confines created by the mixed evergreen border surrounding the site. The pathway system thoughtfully meanders through the distinctly different areas of the woodland garden creating a pleasant walking or cross country skiing experience.

After the final piece of sod had been rolled out and the last wheelbarrow of mulch had been spread, the Land Design team walked the garden with Jason to ensure everything met or exceeded his expectations. We went over important maintenance practices which would help the new flora flourish and keep the old invasives at bay, and we had a chance to review how the finished landscape lived up to the goals we set during the design phase. The first challenge of getting approval for the project from the conservation commission prior to starting construction had already been met, and after construction the commission reiterated that our work would only have a positive impact on the adjacent wetland. The second challenge was to make sure the new landscaping would aid in the fight against the old invasive plant material. Between sand pathways, lawn pathways, and boulder walls we were able to greatly cut down on the amount of square footage where the invasives could possibly return. In the plant beds, the roots of the old invasive vines were grubbed out and a heavy layer of mulch was applied after the new plants were installed. Those steps we took will give Jason a great chance at keeping the old invasives away, but as is the case with all landscapes, ongoing landscape maintenance will be the key to keeping the gardens pristine. Finally the third challenge was to make the site feel more like a private oasis and less like a fishbowl. Although the mixed evergreens around the perimeter of the site will need some time to mature in order to create a solid screen, the trees provided an immediate positive impact in regards to traffic noise as well as, giving the local high school kids the benefit of the doubt, accidental trespassers.
