If you’re looking for a perennial that brings a tropical, showstopping presence to a New England landscape, red hot poker (Kniphofia hybrids) is hard to beat. Also known as torch flower or torch lily, this herbaceous perennial produces bold, bottlebrush-shaped flower spikes that light up the late spring and summer garden and pull in hummingbirds and butterflies along the way.

At Land Design Associates in Walpole, red hot poker is one of our favorite “wow factor” perennials to recommend for sunny beds, borders, and pollinator gardens. Here’s everything you need to know about this striking plant, from origins to care.

What Is Red Hot Poker (Kniphofia)?

Kniphofia is a genus of herbaceous perennials native to the mountains of southern and tropical Africa. Most varieties available in garden centers today are hybrids, bred from a mix of species including K. uvaria, K. bruceae, K. galpinii, K. pauciflora, and K. triangularis. This crossbreeding has produced a huge range of sizes, bloom times, and flower colors which is why you’ll see such variety from one “red hot poker” to the next.

The signature feature is the flower spike: a dense column of tubular flowers that open from the bottom of the spike upward, creating a glowing, torch-like effect. Many varieties are two-toned, either because the hybrid itself is bicolor or because individual flowers emerge in one shade and fade to another as the bloom matures often shifting from a hot orange red at the base to soft yellow near the top.

Appearance and Bloom

Flower color: Red, orange, pink, yellow, white, and greenish white, plus softer pastel shades

Bloom form: Densely packed, bottlebrush-like spikes atop upright, leafless stalks

Bloom time: Late Spring through summer, with some varieties reblooming into fall

Foliage: A basal tuft of narrow, grass-like leaves in green to blue-green tones, with an upright, fountain-like habit

Plant size: Highly variable by hybrid dwarf varieties stay around 1.5 feet tall, while larger cultivars send up flower spikes reaching 6 feet

This range in size makes Kniphofia a flexible choice, whether you need a compact accent for the front of a border or a dramatic vertical statement toward the back of a bed.

Where and How to Plant Red Hot Poker

Red hot poker performs best with the right site conditions from the start:

Sun: Full sun is essential for strong flowering and sturdy, upright growth. Plants grown in too much shade tend to flop and bloom poorly.

Soil: Rich, well-drained soil is a must. Kniphofia is notably intolerant of wet, heavy, or poorly drained soils, which can lead to crown and root rot one of the few real threats to this otherwise tough plant. If your soil holds water, amend it generously or consider a raised bed or slope.

Spacing: Give plants room to develop their full basal clump; overcrowding can trap moisture around the crown, increasing rot risk.

Companion planting: The vertical, torch-like blooms pair beautifully with ornamental grasses, coneflowers, black-eyed Susan, salvia, and other sun-loving perennials that offer contrasting texture and softer color.

Seasonal Care and Maintenance

Red hot poker is relatively low maintenance once established, but a few seasonal tasks help it perform its best year after year:

After flowering: Remove spent flower stalks at the base to keep the planting looking tidy and to redirect the plant’s energy away from seed production.

Early spring: Cut foliage back to about 3 inches before new growth emerges. This clears out old, winter-worn leaves and makes room for fresh growth.

Winter protection (especially in colder climates): In more northern regions including much of New England where the crown needs some protection from winter moisture and cold. A common technique is to gather and tie the foliage together in late fall, forming a loose canopy over the crown. This simple step helps shed water away from the center of the plant, reducing the risk of water pooling and freezing in the crown, which can be fatal to the plant.

Transplanting: Kniphofia doesn’t appreciate being moved frequently, so it’s best treated as a long-term resident once you’ve found the right spot. Transplanting should be limited to when it’s truly necessary.

Dividing: When a clump has outgrown its space or flowering has declined, division can rejuvenate it. Rather than splitting through the crown, remove offsets (small new plants) from the sides of the established clump to be gentler on the parent plant and give you new, ready-to-establish divisions.

Pests, Disease, and Wildlife Value

One of the best things about red hot poker is how trouble-free it is in the landscape. Plants generally have no significant insect or disease problems, making them a low-maintenance choice for busy homeowners and a reliable performer for landscape designs where plant health is a priority.

What Kniphofia does attract is beneficial wildlife. The nectar-rich, tubular flowers are a favorite of hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators, making red hot poker an excellent addition to pollinator gardens, cutting gardens, and any landscape designed to support local wildlife.

Why We Recommend Red Hot Poker for Walpole-Area Landscapes

For clients looking to add bold color, vertical interest, and pollinator activity to a sunny bed or border, red hot poker checks a lot of boxes: showy summer blooms, minimal pest and disease pressure, and genuine wildlife value. With the right soil drainage and a little winter care, it’s a perennial that rewards a modest amount of attention with a dramatic, long-lasting display.

At Land Design Associates, we help Walpole-area homeowners select and place perennials like Kniphofia where they’ll thrive accounting for sun exposure, drainage, and how a plant will read against the rest of the landscape design, not just how it looks on a nursery tag.

Frequently Asked Questions About Red Hot Poker

Is red hot poker easy to grow? Yes. Red hot poker (Kniphofia) is considered a low-maintenance perennial as long as it’s planted in full sun with well-drained soil. Its main requirement is good drainage; it has no significant insect or disease problems otherwise.

Do hummingbirds like red hot poker? Yes. The dense, tubular flower spikes of Kniphofia are highly attractive to hummingbirds, along with butterflies and other pollinators, making it a popular choice for pollinator and wildlife gardens.

How do you protect red hot poker in winter? In colder climates, gather the foliage and tie it together in late fall to form a protective canopy over the crown. This helps prevent water from pooling in the center of the plant and freezing, which can damage or kill the crown.

When should you cut back red hot poker? Remove flower stalks after blooming has finished and cut the foliage back to about 3 inches in early spring, before new growth begins.

Can red hot poker handle wet soil? No. Kniphofia performs poorly in wet, heavy soil, which can lead to crown and root rot. Well-drained soil is essential for long-term plant health.

How tall does red hot poker grow? Height varies widely by hybrid, ranging from compact dwarf varieties around 1.5 feet tall to larger cultivars with flower spikes reaching up to 6 feet.

The Bottom Line

Red hot poker brings a rare combination of bold, tropical-looking color and easygoing care to the perennial border. With full sun, well-drained soil, and a little seasonal attention especially winter crown protection in colder regions. Kniphofia rewards gardeners with reliable summer blooms and a steady stream of hummingbirds and butterflies.
