Scope of Work: The landscape project involved reimagining the backyard as a series of connected, functional outdoor “rooms,” each offering a unique experience. The goal was to maximize the usable outdoor space without extensive grading while integrating design elements that fostered social interaction and relaxation. The final design created areas for grilling, dining, relaxing, and gathering around a firepit—all within a harmonious layout.

Existing Site Conditions: The backyard initially had two small decks connected by a walkway leading to the driveway. While these provided access to the yard, they were separate and didn’t lend themselves to larger gatherings or a natural flow between spaces. Additionally, there was no patio or designated outdoor entertainment area, leaving the space underutilized.

Challenges:

• Permitting Requirements: Navigating local permit regulations was a crucial part of the project. Ensuring compliance with town ordinances and zoning requirements was critical before any construction could begin.

• Maximizing Space Without Excessive Grading: The backyard’s slope meant that any design would have to consider the natural topography. Rather than engaging in extensive grading, the solution would need to integrate the existing elevation changes creatively to create functional, flat areas for seating and entertainment.

Design Solution: Our approach was to integrate multiple “outdoor rooms” that catered to various types of gatherings, all within a cohesive flow. By utilizing a tiered design, we were able to break up the backyard into distinct spaces without the need for large-scale grading.

Unifying the Decks: The two existing decks were combined into one continuous structure, connecting the two rear entrances of the home. This provided a larger space for relaxation, whether it’s enjoying a quiet morning coffee or hosting small gatherings. Trex composite decking was chosen for its durability and low-maintenance properties, ensuring the space would stand up to years of use with minimal upkeep.

Firepit Area – A Cozy Retreat: Tucked into a corner of the yard, a firepit area was designed as a focal point for evening gatherings. Surrounded by the property’s natural landscape, this spot offers an intimate space for guests to relax around a fire while still feeling connected to the rest of the backyard. This area is perfect for casual evenings with friends or more formal events, with the natural setting enhancing the overall ambiance.

First Patio – Grilling and Bar Area: A few steps down from the deck is the first patio area, specifically designed for grilling and serving. This space includes an outdoor kitchen, complete with a Techo-Bloc setup. The homeowners wanted a fully functional cooking space, so we installed a Green Egg grill, a griddle for versatile cooking, a refrigerator, and a trash drawer for convenience. The bar area provides ample seating, making this space ideal for casual meals, hosting cookouts, or simply enjoying a drink while cooking.

Second Patio – Dining and Socializing: Stepping down again, the second patio space opens up for dining. This area offers a larger seating arrangement, perfect for hosting family dinners, outdoor parties, or casual gatherings. The multi-tiered approach to the patio spaces not only maximized the usability of the backyard but also created a natural flow between each section, allowing guests to move seamlessly from one space to another.

Design Aesthetic and Key Features:

• Firepit: The firepit area serves as the perfect place for cozy evenings with friends and family, surrounded by the natural beauty of the landscape.

• Outdoor Kitchen: Equipped with premium materials from Techo-Bloc, the outdoor kitchen was designed to function as a complete cooking area. The Green Egg, griddle, refrigerator, and trash drawer ensure that everything the homeowners need is conveniently located outdoors, allowing for easy entertaining.

• Lighting: Bistro lighting was installed to add ambiance and warmth. It creates a soft, welcoming glow across the patio areas, making the space usable well into the evening.

• Decking: Trex composite decking was chosen for the unified deck due to its durability, resistance to weather, and low maintenance, ensuring the space will remain beautiful and functional for years to come.

• Tiered Patio Design: The tiered patio was key to making the most of the sloped landscape. By creating distinct levels, we were able to provide separate zones for grilling, dining, and relaxing, each with its own purpose while still feeling connected.

Challenges Overcome: The biggest challenge in this project was working within the existing slope without excessive grading. By introducing a tiered design, we maximized the usable space while maintaining the natural contours of the land. Navigating the permitting process was another hurdle, but our team ensured that all regulations were met, allowing the project to move forward without delays.

Challenges: Sloped Terrain and Conservation Land

From the outset, we were presented with several design challenges that needed to be addressed. The backyard had a significant slope, which not only limited the functionality of the space but also required careful consideration for drainage. Additionally, the property bordered conservation-protected riverfront land, so we had to navigate strict conservation setbacks and restrictions. This required meticulous planning and collaboration with a survey engineer to ensure the design complied with all environmental regulations.

Phased Approach: Prioritizing the Backyard

Given the scale of the project, the homeowners opted for a phased approach, focusing on the backyard as their top priority. Our primary objective was to create a multi-level entertainment area that not only provided ample space for different activities but also addressed the sloped terrain.

Phase One: Designing a Multi-Level Entertainment Space

To solve the slope issue, we designed a tiered patio system that flowed seamlessly from the front yard to the backyard, integrating each level into a cohesive space for entertaining. The top level served as the transition point from the driveway and the outdoor deck, welcoming guests with creative stone walls and raised garden beds that added texture and softness to the design. This space offered an inviting entrance to the lower entertainment areas, leading guests naturally through the landscape.

The middle level featured a cozy gas fire pit with seating, strategically placed far enough from the house to create an intimate gathering area. This allowed for an unobstructed view of the yard while maintaining a sense of connection to the other outdoor spaces. The fire pit became the central focal point, offering warmth and ambiance during cooler evenings.

Finally, the lowest level was reserved for grilling and dining. This spacious patio area was designed to accommodate outdoor cooking and large family gatherings, with plenty of room for seating, a dining table, and a grilling station. By separating the dining and fire pit areas, we created distinct zones for different activities, making the space versatile and functional.

Phase Two: Future Plans for Driveway, Basketball Court, and Front Yard

Looking ahead, the homeowners also envisioned additional improvements to the front of the property. In future phases, they planned to redo the driveway and create a basketball area for their kids. This would include a small adjacent patio where the family could spend time together while enjoying the outdoor activities.

Additionally, the homeowners wanted to refresh their front yard with updated plantings, giving their home a polished and welcoming curb appeal. Our plan included a range of native plantings to complement the property’s natural surroundings, ensuring the landscape remained visually cohesive from front to back.

Working Within Conservation Boundaries

Given the proximity to conservation-protected riverfront land, it was crucial that we adhered to environmental guidelines throughout the project. We worked closely with the survey engineer to ensure that all design elements, including the patios and plantings, were compliant with conservation setbacks. This also involved presenting our plans to the local conservation board for approval.

To meet the environmental requirements, we incorporated native plantings throughout the property. These plants not only helped to stabilize the soil on the sloped terrain but also contributed to the ecological health of the riverfront area, blending the project harmoniously with its natural surroundings.

The Result: A Stunning, Functional Outdoor Space

This Westwood family now enjoys a beautifully designed, multi-functional outdoor space that perfectly suits their lifestyle. With carefully considered access points from the driveway and the deck, as well as distinct areas for cooking, dining, and relaxing by the fire pit, the backyard has become an ideal space for both intimate family gatherings and larger social events.

As we move forward with future phases of the project, including the driveway, basketball court, and front yard updates, we are excited to continue transforming this property into the family’s dream outdoor oasis.

Client Wishlist and Initial Landscape Condition: The existing landscape was essentially a blank canvas—a common scenario in newly developed neighborhoods. The contractor who built the home had planted a simple lawn with minimal foundation plantings, leaving the space underutilized and lacking character. This provided us with the freedom to design from scratch but also required an innovative approach to meet the client’s vision while adhering to the conservation committee’s stringent requirements.

The client’s vision for the backyard was ambitious, encompassing a wide range of outdoor amenities, all within a limited space. These included:

• A pool with a sun shelf
• A hot tub
• A custom U-shaped outdoor kitchen and grill island
• A gas fire pit
• Landscape lighting
• Privacy plantings to create a secluded outdoor retreat

Addressing Conservation Committee Requirements: To meet the conservation committee’s guidelines, we collaborated with drainage engineers to manage all stormwater runoff on-site. This was achieved using Cultec drywells, which are underground chambers designed to collect and infiltrate rainwater back into the soil. These systems allow water to naturally percolate into the ground, reducing runoff and preventing surface flooding.

We utilized an existing Cultec drywell in the front yard to handle part of the runoff, and installed a larger system in the backyard. Patio drains were routed to this new drywell, ensuring all water from the hardscape—such as the patio and pool deck—was captured and managed in compliance with regulations. This sustainable solution not only mitigated stormwater but also recharged groundwater, addressing both environmental and regulatory concerns.

Key Features of the Project:

1. Porcelain Paver Patio: One of the standout elements of this landscape design is the use of porcelain pavers for the pool deck and patio areas. Porcelain is an increasingly popular material for outdoor applications, thanks to its durability, aesthetic appeal, and heat resistance. Unlike natural stone or concrete pavers, porcelain remains cooler to the touch under direct sunlight, making it an excellent choice for poolside applications. Additionally, it offers a price point that falls between concrete pavers and high-end natural stone like bluestone or granite, making it an attractive option for both functionality and budget.
2. Custom U-Shaped Grill Island: The outdoor kitchen is a focal point of the backyard, featuring a custom-built U-shaped grill island. This design not only maximizes functionality for the chef but also enhances the social aspect of the space. Friends and family can comfortably sit at the bar-style seating around the grill, allowing the host to interact with guests while preparing meals. The island’s positioning also provides an excellent view of the pool, creating a cohesive entertainment zone.
3. Boulder Retaining Wall: To maximize the usable space in the backyard, we installed a stunning boulder retaining wall. This feature not only served an aesthetic purpose but also addressed a functional challenge posed by the existing grade of the landscape. The natural slope of the yard limited the amount of flat, usable space, so by incorporating a boulder wall, we were able to expand the level area and create more room for the pool, hot tub, and surrounding patio. The large, natural stones blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment and lend a rugged, yet elegant, character to the backyard. This approach also helped manage erosion and water flow, further enhancing the project’s stormwater management system.
4. Pool with Sun Shelf: The pool includes a luxurious sun shelf—a shallow area perfect for lounging and cooling off on hot days without fully submerging in the water. This feature adds an element of resort-like relaxation to the space and is especially popular for families with children or those who enjoy sunbathing.

Front Yard Design for Curb Appeal: While the backyard was the primary focus of this project, the front yard was also transformed to enhance the home’s curb appeal and create a welcoming entrance. A stunning freestanding stone wall, complete with an address block and under-cap lighting, serves as a statement feature. This wall not only defines the property’s boundary but also adds a touch of elegance that can be appreciated day or night.

A generously sized paver walkway was installed to connect the front landing to the driveway and street, offering both functionality and visual appeal. In the landscape beds, a mix of evergreens, hydrangeas, perennials, and ornamental grasses was chosen to ensure multi-season interest. The evergreens provide structure and color in the winter months, while the flowering plants and grasses create texture and vibrant hues during spring and summer.

This Dedham project is a testament to the power of thoughtful design and engineering. Despite the challenges posed by the conservation committee’s restrictions and the tight space, we were able to create a beautiful and functional outdoor space that exceeded the client’s expectations. By leveraging creative design solutions, such as the custom grill island, boulder retaining wall, and porcelain pavers, alongside careful stormwater management planning, we transformed a blank slate into a stunning, multifunctional landscape. The result is a private, luxurious outdoor retreat that blends seamlessly with the natural surroundings and complies with all regulatory guidelines.

Nothing beats a perfectly done steak on a nice summer evening served with grilled vegetables for a healthy side dish.  With a well-designed outdoor kitchen, you can have a nice place to grill outside all-year-round. In warm months, it will be the center of your outdoor living with family and friends. The rest of the year, it will be a functional part of your home, (albeit outside). If you decide to design an outdoor kitchen it can seem really confusing at the beginning especially if you don’t know from where to start. Having an outdoor kitchen checklist at hand can save you lots of time and make the whole building process less stressful.

Simple or Luxe?

You can make the kitchen as simple or luxurious as you want.  From a simple built-in grill with a nice granite counter, to something more elaborate such as a smoker, fridge, beer tap, warming drawer, sink etc., you can include many options to suit your tastes.

The Hostess with the Mostess

Do you entertain a lot?  Do you wish you had a place where you could?  If so, consider the kitchen island as the heart of your outdoor room.  As you can imagine, “if you build it they will come.”

It’s a sure thing that a group will form next to the guy doing the grilling as beer gets sipped and conversation flows.  Why not create a nice space where people can sit at a counter on stools while they advise the master griller.

Why not have a fridge handy to reach into to get another beer or chardonnay?  And rather than balancing all the food to be grilled and cooked food on a flimsy grill stand, why not make an ample granite counter part of your new outdoor room?

Location, Location, Location!

If you locate your outdoor kitchen close to your eating area, it will offer very convenient year-round use.

Build your grill island adjacent to an outdoor dining table.  This will allow easy passing of hot-off-the-grill items to the table.  It also allows the cook to be part of the dinner table conversation.

If you have fire pit or fireplace near your outdoor kitchen, people can sit at the island bar seating and have a view of the fire. It is kind of like stadium seating.

And when it’s cold outside, wouldn’t it be nice to dart out to the grill to whip up some marinated chicken and grilled asparagus?

Lighting really gives a special warm evening ambiance of your outdoor room.  We usually put lighting under the counter and around the patio sitting walls.  Landscape lighting or “nightscaping” is very soft and will add just the right glow to your evening activities. People fall in love with the lighting and its effect similar to full moon light.

Add a Pergola

Consider putting a pergola over your kitchen grill island, this can provide shade via plants growing on the wood or movable fabric shades. You can also hang lighting or mount speakers in the pergola to add to the ambiance.
