Here's what actually drives the price: materials, site conditions, drainage, and design choices, and why Massachusetts's frost line makes this different from a national average quote.

For most Massachusetts homeowners, a full landscape design project — from the first consultation to the final walkthrough — takes between 3 and 9 months, depending on project size, permitting requirements, and the season you start in. Smaller projects can move in as little as 6 to 8 weeks; larger design-build projects involving grading, structures, or conservation review commonly stretch to a full year.

If you’re planning a landscape project in Westwood, Walpole, or anywhere across Norfolk County, that range probably raises more questions than it answers. Timelines vary because landscape design isn’t one step — it’s six, and each one has its own pace, its own dependencies, and its own way of running long. Below is the phase-by-phase breakdown we walk clients through at the very first consultation, so nobody is guessing halfway through spring.

Project Timelines at a Glance

Before the phase-by-phase detail, here’s how timeline scales with project size. These are typical ranges from consultation to completed installation, assuming a start in spring or early summer with no major permitting delays.

Medium

Patio + plantings, outdoor lighting, drainage fix

Large / Design-Build

Full backyard renovation, pool integration, retaining walls, structures

4–8 weeks

6–12 months

Timelines assume no conservation commission filing is required. Add 60–120 days if your property borders wetlands, a pond, or is within a resource area buffer zone — common across parts of Westwood and the South Shore.

The Six Phases of a Landscape Design Project

Phase 1

1–2 weeks

Initial Consultation & Site Walk

We start on-site, not on paper. A designer walks the property with you, talks through how you actually use the space, notes sun exposure, drainage patterns, mature trees worth preserving, and any HOA or town restrictions. This is also when budget range gets discussed honestly — not to box in the design, but so the concept phase doesn’t design something that gets value-engineered into a different project three months later.

Phase 2

2–4 weeks

Concept Design & Site Analysis

This is where the site walk becomes a plan. Our designers produce a base plan, grading and drainage analysis, and an initial concept layout — often as a 2D plan with material and planting direction, and 3D renderings for larger design-build projects so you’re not trying to visualize a patio from a top-down sketch. Medium and large projects typically need the full 2–4 weeks here; small projects can move through concept in under a week.

Phase 3

1–3 weeks (varies by revision rounds)

Design Revisions & Material Selection

Almost no first concept is the final concept — and it shouldn’t be. This phase is where you react, we adjust, and material selections (paver style, plant palette, lighting fixtures) get finalized. The single biggest variable in this phase is response time: a design sitting in someone’s inbox for two weeks between rounds adds two weeks to the project, full stop. Clients who turn around feedback within a few days consistently move through this phase fastest.

Phase 4

2–16 weeks (project-dependent)

Permitting & Approvals

Not every project needs this phase — a planting bed refresh usually doesn’t. But grading changes, retaining walls over a certain height, work near wetlands, pool-adjacent hardscape, or anything requiring a building permit does. In towns with active conservation commissions, filing a Notice of Intent and waiting for a public hearing and approval can add 60 to 120 days on its own. This is the phase most homeowners underestimate, and the one we flag earliest so it doesn’t blindside a fall installation target.

Phase 5

2–10 weeks (seasonal)

Contractor & Crew Scheduling

Once a design is approved and, where needed, permitted, it goes into our production queue. Spring and early fall are our highest-demand installation windows across Norfolk County, which means projects finalized in March for an April start are competing with a lot of other April starts. Projects that lock in design and material selections during winter consistently get earlier installation slots than ones finalized in peak season.

Phase 6

1 day – 10+ weeks

Installation

Installation length depends entirely on scope: a planting-only project might wrap in a day or two; a full design-build renovation with grading, hardscape, structures, lighting, and planting can run 6 to 10 weeks of active on-site work. Weather is the biggest variable here — heavy spring rain or an early cold snap can push hardscape or planting work by days or weeks, which is why we build buffer into every production schedule rather than promise a hard date months in advance.

Why the Same Project Can Take Different Amounts of Time at Different Firms

Homeowners comparing quotes often assume timeline differences come down to how busy a company is. Sometimes that’s true, but more often the gap comes from how a firm structures its own process. A firm that combines design and installation under one team — rather than handing a finished plan off to a separate contractor to bid and schedule — removes an entire negotiation and re-scoping step from the middle of the timeline. It also means the people drawing the plan already know what their own crews can realistically build on your site, which cuts down on the kind of mid-installation redesign that adds weeks to a project after the shovels are already in the ground.

The other major factor is how a firm handles permitting. Some design firms treat conservation filings and permit applications as the homeowner’s responsibility to coordinate separately. At Land Design Associates, permitting runs through the same team managing the design and installation schedule, which means the Notice of Intent filing, the public hearing date, and the production calendar are tracked against each other from day one — instead of a homeowner discovering in month four that nobody had actually filed anything yet.

What Actually Slows a Project Down

In our experience, delays rarely come from the design or installation work itself — they come from a handful of predictable places:

Slow feedback turnaround during the revision phase — the single most common cause of a project running long, and the one most within a homeowner’s control.

Conservation commission or HOA review — public hearing schedules aren’t something any design firm can accelerate, so projects near wetlands or in HOA-governed neighborhoods need extra lead time built in from day one.

Late material decisions — some paver, stone, and fixture products are special-order and carry their own 4–8 week lead times independent of anything else in the project.

Starting in peak season — a project kicked off in April is competing for the same installation windows as everyone else who waited until spring to call; starting design work over the winter avoids this entirely.

Underground surprises — ledge, unexpected drainage issues, or utility conflicts discovered during excavation can add time, though a thorough Phase 1 site walk catches most of these before they become installation-day problems.

Timeline Notes for Westwood Homeowners

Featured Town

Designing in Westwood, MA

Westwood’s mix of larger residential lots, established neighborhoods, and properties bordering the Hale Reservation and Neponset River watershed means conservation commission review comes up more often here than in some neighboring towns. If your project involves grading, drainage work, or construction within a resource area buffer, we build the town’s public hearing and approval timeline into the schedule from the first consultation — not after a permit application gets filed. Several Westwood neighborhoods also carry HOA or deed-restriction guidelines on fencing, structures, and street-facing landscaping, which we review during the site walk so the concept design doesn’t need a late rework.

A completed perennial border and lawn path at a Westwood, MA property, framed by a mature tree canopy and fieldstone wall. For Westwood clients, we typically recommend starting the consultation process in late winter for any project that might touch wetlands review or HOA approval, so permitting runs in parallel with concept design rather than adding time at the back end of the schedule.

Larger Westwood lots also tend to involve more significant grading and drainage planning than a typical in-town property, simply because there’s more square footage to manage water across. That makes the site analysis portion of Phase 2 especially important here — catching a drainage issue on paper during concept design is a matter of adjusting a grading plan, while catching the same issue after excavation has started means stopping work, bringing in additional equipment, and rescheduling the crew for a later date. It’s a difference of days versus weeks, and it’s almost entirely determined by how thorough that early site walk was.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does landscape design take before installation even starts?

The design phase itself — from initial consultation through final revisions — typically takes 3 to 8 weeks depending on project size and how quickly feedback comes back during revisions. Projects requiring permitting or conservation review add significant time on top of design, often 2 to 4 months.

What is the fastest a landscape project can go from consultation to completion?

Small projects — a planting refresh, a walkway, a small patio with no permitting needs — can move from first consultation to completed installation in as little as 6 to 8 weeks, especially when scheduled outside peak spring and fall demand.

Does starting a project in winter actually save time?

Yes. Winter is our design and planning season, so projects that begin the consultation and concept process in December through February typically secure earlier spring or early-summer installation slots than projects that start the process once spring demand has already picked up.

Why do some Westwood projects need conservation commission approval?

Properties near wetlands, ponds, or within a resource area buffer — which includes parts of Westwood near the Hale Reservation and Neponset River watershed — fall under the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act and local conservation bylaws. Grading, drainage, or construction work in these areas requires a Notice of Intent filing and a public hearing before work can begin, which can add 60 to 120 days to a project timeline.

How much does slow feedback during design revisions actually delay a project?

Significantly. Because our design team works across multiple active projects, a two-week gap in client feedback typically translates to a two-week — not zero-week — delay in the overall schedule. Clients who turn around revision feedback within a few days consistently move through the design phase fastest.

Can I get a firm installation date before the design is finalized?

Not a guaranteed one. Installation scheduling depends on a finalized, and where required, permitted design, along with material lead times and seasonal demand. We provide a realistic installation window once the design is approved, and build weather buffer into every production schedule rather than commit to a hard date months in advance.

A homeowner's guide to landscape design and installation across the western suburbs and the South Shore — seven keys to a stunning, four-season outdoor living space.

A great property tells a story before you ever reach the front door. The way a driveway curves toward the entry, the rhythm of plantings along a walk, the stone terrace that looks as though it has always belonged there — none of it happens by accident. Thoughtful landscape design and installation is what turns a house on a lot into a home with a setting, and in towns like Newton, Wellesley, and Hingham, where both homes and expectations run high, that difference is impossible to miss.

If you’re researching landscape design and installation for a property west of Boston or along the South Shore, this guide walks through what separates a forgettable yard from an outdoor space you’ll use and love for decades. We’ve distilled it into seven keys, drawn from the way our designers approach the architecture of a landscape from the very first sketch.

Why Homes in Newton, Wellesley, and the South Shore Deserve a Considered Approach

The properties our clients own are not interchangeable. A shingle-style colonial on a wooded acre in Weston asks for something very different from a coastal home perched above the harbor in Cohasset. A tightly built Newton lot with mature trees and close neighbors calls for privacy and proportion; a sweeping Duxbury parcel near the bay calls for views, salt tolerance, and wind. Good landscape design begins by reading the property — its grade, its light, its soil, its sightlines — and responding to it rather than imposing a template.

New England adds its own demands. Our freeze-thaw cycles punish poorly built walkways. Our clay-heavy and ledge-prone soils complicate drainage. Our four distinct seasons mean a landscape has to look intentional in February as well as July. The architecture of a successful outdoor space accounts for all of it from the start, which is exactly why a coordinated approach to landscape design and installation outperforms a piecemeal, contractor-by-contractor effort almost every time.

Key 1: Start With a Master Plan, Not a Plant List

The single biggest difference between a landscape that ages gracefully and one that feels stitched together is planning. Before a single shrub is ordered, a strong design establishes the architectural framework of the property: where you arrive, how you move through the space, where the eye should rest, and how each zone relates to the next.

A master plan lets you build in phases without painting yourself into a corner. You might install the front entry and primary terrace this year and add the pool surround, fire feature, or garden rooms over the next two seasons — all guided by one coherent vision. Clients in Wellesley and Needham especially value this, because it lets a significant investment unfold on a realistic timeline while every dollar still serves the larger plan. Skip this step and you tend to pay twice: once to install, and again to tear out what no longer fits.

Key 2: Design for All Four Seasons

In our climate, a landscape that only performs in summer is a landscape that disappoints for eight months of the year. Sound landscape design treats winter structure as seriously as June color.

That means layering in evergreens for year-round form, ornamental grasses and seed heads that catch winter light, bark and branch interest from specimen trees, and hardscape that holds the composition when the perennials have died back. It also means sequencing bloom so there is something happening from the first hellebores of early spring through late-season hydrangeas and fall foliage. Lighting extends the usable hours into the long New England evenings. When the architectural bones are strong, a Westwood or Weston property looks deliberate and handsome even under a dusting of snow — which is when prospective buyers and your own morning coffee most appreciate it.

Key 3: Build the Bones — Hardscape and Structure First

Plants soften a landscape, but hardscape gives it shape. Terraces, walkways, retaining walls, steps, walls, and patios are the architecture of outdoor living, and getting them right is where quality landscape design and installation truly proves itself.

The craft hides in the parts you don’t see. A bluestone terrace that stays flat for twenty years depends on proper excavation, compacted base material, and drainage installed long before the first stone is set. A fieldstone wall that survives New England winters depends on correct footings and backfill. Material selection matters too: weathered granite and native fieldstone speak the regional dialect of South Shore towns like Hingham and Cohasset, while crisp cut bluestone and clean masonry can suit the more formal estates of Weston. Build the bones correctly and everything you plant has a structure to lean on.

Key 4: Plant With Place in Mind

Beautiful planting design is equal parts artistry and horticulture. The goal is a composition that thrives — not one that merely looks good on installation day and struggles thereafter.

That starts with matching plants to conditions: full-sun specimens where the light supports them, woodland understory plantings beneath the mature oaks common in Newton and Weston, and salt- and wind-tolerant species for exposed coastal sites in Duxbury and Cohasset. We lean on a strong backbone of regionally proven and native plants that support pollinators and require less coddling, then layer in seasonal interest, texture, and color. Thoughtful spacing anticipates how a planting will look in three and ten years, not just at delivery. The reward is a landscape that fills in gracefully and demands less of you over time.

Key 5: Create Outdoor Living Spaces That Extend the Home

The most-used landscapes are the ones that function like additional rooms. Today’s homeowners want their yards to do real work: dining and entertaining, lounging by a fire, swimming, gardening, and quiet retreat.

Designing those spaces is an exercise in architectural thinking — defining each room with walls, plantings, or grade changes; setting comfortable proportions; and connecting the rooms with clear circulation. An outdoor kitchen and dining terrace flows to a fire-pit lounge; a pool surround transitions to a shaded sitting area; a private garden tucks away from the entertaining zones. In higher-density neighborhoods around Newton and Needham, screening and privacy plantings make these rooms feel secluded even on a modest lot. The result is square footage you actually live in, often for far more of the year than people expect.

Key 6: Get the Details Right — Water, Light, and Drainage

The elements that elevate a landscape from nice to memorable are frequently the ones clients don’t think to ask about.

Drainage comes first. Grading, swales, dry wells, and downspout management protect your home’s foundation and keep terraces and lawns from becoming swamps each spring — a non-negotiable in our wet, freeze-thaw climate. Low-voltage landscape lighting then transforms the property after dark, highlighting specimen trees, washing stone walls in soft light, and making walkways safe and inviting. A well-designed irrigation system keeps new plantings established without waste. And water features — a quiet spill fountain or a naturalistic basin — add sound and movement that mask street noise and draw you outside. None of these details should feel bolted on; the strongest landscape design and installation weaves them into the plan from day one.

Key 7: Partner With the Right Local Design-and-Install Team

A brilliant plan executed poorly is just an expensive disappointment. This is why design and installation belong under one roof. When the team that drew the plan also builds it, intent survives the journey from paper to property — the stone is set the way it was drawn, the grades are honored, and the plantings land where the design calls for them.

Local knowledge is part of the value, too. A firm that works across Newton, Needham, Wellesley, Westwood, Weston, Cohasset, Hingham, and Duxbury understands the soils, the microclimates, the permitting nuances, and the architectural character of each town. That fluency shortens the path from idea to installed reality and reduces the costly surprises that derail less-experienced crews. When you’re evaluating landscape design and installation partners, look for a single accountable team, a portfolio of comparable properties, and a clear, phased process.

A Note on Towns: West of Boston vs. the South Shore

The communities we serve fall into two distinct character groups, and good design respects the difference.

West and southwest of Boston — Newton, Needham, Wellesley, Westwood, and Weston — properties often feature mature trees, established neighborhoods, and architecture that ranges from stately colonials to refined contemporary homes. Here the work tends to emphasize privacy, formal structure, layered plantings, and outdoor living spaces that feel like a natural extension of substantial homes.

Along the South Shore — Cohasset, Hingham, and Duxbury — coastal exposure changes the equation. Salt spray, sandy or ledge-bound soils, and steady wind demand resilient material and plant choices, while spectacular water views shape every sightline decision. The best coastal landscapes frame the view, stand up to the elements, and still feel relaxed and rooted in their setting.

What to Expect From the Process and the Investment

A professional landscape design and installation project generally moves through a few clear stages: an on-site consultation to understand your goals and the property, a design phase that produces a master plan and detailed drawings, a transparent proposal and phasing plan, and then installation managed by the same team. Many clients choose to phase the work over one to three seasons, which spreads the investment and lets the landscape mature in stages.

Costs vary widely with scope, materials, grade, and site complexity, so any honest answer comes after seeing the property — a small terrace refresh and a full estate transformation occupy very different ends of the spectrum. What stays constant is the principle that careful design and quality construction protect the value of the work for decades. In the towns we serve, where a home’s setting contributes meaningfully to both daily enjoyment and resale value, that’s an investment that tends to pay you back.

Frequently Asked Questions About Landscape Design and Installation

How long does a landscape design and installation project take? Design typically takes several weeks depending on scope, and installation can range from a couple of weeks for a focused project to multiple phases across one to three seasons for a comprehensive property transformation.

Should design and installation be handled by the same company? In most cases, yes. Keeping design and installation under one team preserves the original intent, simplifies accountability, and reduces the miscommunication and finger-pointing that arise when separate firms hand work back and forth.

What’s the best time of year to start a project in Massachusetts? You can begin the design process in any season. Many homeowners plan over the winter so installation can start as soon as the ground is workable in spring — and starting design early means you’re ahead of the busy season rather than behind it.

Do you serve both the western suburbs and the South Shore? Yes. We design and install landscapes across Newton, Needham, Wellesley, Westwood, Weston, Cohasset, Hingham, Duxbury, and the surrounding communities.

Ready to Reimagine Your Property?

Whether you’re picturing a private garden retreat in Wellesley, a coastal outdoor living space in Cohasset, or a complete transformation of a Weston estate, it begins with a conversation and a plan. Contact Land Design Associates to schedule a consultation and start designing an outdoor space built to last.

Shine a Light on Your Landscape: Outdoor Lighting Benefits in Newton, Needham, Wellesley & Greater Boston Suburbs

Luxury backyard patio in Newton, MA with modern outdoor furniture, warm landscape lighting, and lush privacy hedges.

When the sun goes down, your outdoor living space doesn’t have to disappear into darkness. Professionally designed landscape lighting transforms your property into a warm, welcoming, and functional extension of your home—enhancing both beauty and value. Whether you live in Newton, Needham, Wellesley, Weston, Wayland, Westwood, Walpole, Dedham, Norwood, or anywhere in Norfolk County and the southwest Boston metro area, outdoor lighting offers benefits that go far beyond simply helping you see at night.

Highlight Your Home’s Best Features

Landscape lighting is the finishing touch that brings your property’s architecture and landscaping to life after sunset. Strategic placement of path lights, uplights, and accent lighting draws the eye to:

Architectural details like stonework, columns, and trim

Landscape features including ornamental trees, garden beds, and water features

Outdoor living spaces such as patios, pergolas, and fire pits

For example, a Wellesley home with elegant front columns can be transformed with uplighting that makes the entryway stand out. In Newton, a backyard koi pond can shimmer under soft, low-voltage lighting. These touches make your home look high-end and well cared for—day or night.

Extend Your Outdoor Living Hours

One of the biggest advantages of professional outdoor lighting is the ability to enjoy your yard well past sunset. Imagine:

Hosting dinner on the patio in Needham under a soft glow

Relaxing by the fire pit in Westwood late into the evening

Taking a peaceful stroll through a lit garden in Wayland

With proper design, outdoor lighting eliminates dark, unused corners and creates a comfortable, inviting atmosphere for both entertaining and quiet family time. The right lighting makes your yard feel like an extension of your living room—perfect for every season in New England.

A High-ROI Upgrade That Increases Home Value

Outdoor lighting is more than a style upgrade—it’s a smart investment. Industry research shows that professionally installed landscape lighting can increase a home’s perceived value by up to 15%. In competitive real estate markets like Newton, Needham, and Wellesley, a well-lit property stands out from the rest.

Potential buyers see a home that is both beautiful and secure, and they often associate outdoor lighting with high-quality maintenance and luxury living. In many cases, the cost of installation can be recouped—and even surpassed—when it’s time to sell.

Boost Curb Appeal and Safety

From a curb appeal standpoint, warm, layered lighting instantly elevates your property’s appearance. Even modest homes look elegant and upscale when illuminated correctly.

From a safety perspective, lighting is equally important:

Walkway lights prevent trips and falls

Driveway lights guide cars safely at night

Motion-activated lighting deters unwanted visitors

Well-lit entries increase security and peace of mind

For homeowners in Norfolk County and Boston suburbs, this combination of beauty and safety is a win-win.

Low-Maintenance, Energy-Efficient Lighting

Today’s LED outdoor lighting systems are built to last. Compared to traditional halogen bulbs, LEDs:

Use up to 80% less energy

Last 10+ years before needing replacement

Produce less heat, making them safer and more eco-friendly

Paired with smart lighting controls—including timers, dimmers, and app-based systems—you can create the perfect ambiance while keeping costs low.

The design process took input from all members of this Newton, MA family!

When choosing a landscape firm to partner with, there are a number of factors to consider. Often times the cost of an outdoor landscape project is similar to doing a new kitchen or family room. There are many factors that go into the design, building, and maintenance of your new investment. By hiring an experienced contractor, you can be assured that all the aspects of the design and installation have been considered. Who wants to get to the end of a project and find out that the contractor has missed crucial steps in the process or not installed things according to proper standards? This often happens when inexperienced and “budget” contractors are chosen, leading to frustration, costly re-work and possibly legal action. Who needs that! Follow these recommendations to ensure your project is done right and the only hassle you have is carrying all the food out to your new grill area for your first neighborhood barbecue.

The Value of a Trained Designer

Landscape design drawing for a Newton, MA residence

The first step in any building process is to sift through all the possibilities and make the best outdoor spaces possible. Here is where a trained designer is worth their weight in gold. By putting your ideas down on paper and combining them with new ideas, the project can easily be thought through in terms of space utilization, flow, visual elements and material selection. Don’t settle for a contractor who draws an illegible sketch on a napkin or who tells you how your yard renovation will look using a lot of arm-waving and gesturing. Let’s face it. The process is very abstract taking concepts from ideas to reality. We recommend hiring a company who can give you colored drawings that you can easily understand and use to visualize the finished product. The major benefit to drawing out all ideas on paper is that you can change your mind easily and also let one idea lead to the creation of another. The client can “try on” different designs and let them percolate over time eliminating the awful potential of being at the end of the project and saying “I wish I had thought of that BEFORE the job was complete.” The landscape design, to quote Frank Lloyd Wright, “Is the cheapest but most important part of the job.”

Do Subcontractors do the Installation Work?

If you have ever had any construction work done at your house, you know the delay game. The general contractor explains his delays and the fact that there is no one working on the site that week as “waiting for subcontractors.” This often drags out the project and can create installation quality problems due to the finger-pointing of mistakes and miscommunication.
It’s much better to hire a company that can do all the work in house. That way there is no subcontractor excuse game being played. A high-quality landscape firm should be able to do all the grading, walls, patios, lights, irrigation, plants and fences themselves. It is usually the case and is perfectly fine that these companies sub out asphalt driveways and large tree removal.

How the Installation Process Unfolds is Crucial for a Great Outcome

Strong communication is key!

Make sure that the landscape company that you hire has a site foreman or project manager that is communicative and asks a lot of questions during the installation process. Make sure the designer doesn’t disappear and is on-site regularly to guide the installer and to handle any issues that may arise. Communication with you the homeowner is critical all along the way. The lack of keeping you in the loop often leads to rework and potential conflict.

A major root problem in most construction projects is poor communication on the part of the contractor. Our approach is the opposite of most contractors who prefer that the client is not involved. We, on the other hand, love keeping the client involved, our foremen are strong communicators that engage with clients proactively when unexpected changes must be made.

Choose Experience: It Matters

Find out how many years the company has been in business and how much experience the designer, project manager, and foreman have. Also, did they go to school for landscape design and construction? Or are they inexperienced and lacking fundamental construction knowledge. The worst thing is to entrust your

Is Your Contractor Insured?

Usually, an established company will have two points covered in the insurance area. Firstly, they will have an overabundance of insurance coverage for property damage or worker injury. Secondly, a good company will never have to use its insurance because it is a well run and safe company. Often times small “Truck and Shovel” companies or people just starting out in the business will not have insurance. The problem with this is that if there is an accident on your property, you and your insurance company will have to pay not the contractor who will usually disappear and not answer their phone.
So remember to ask all these questions if you live in Norwood, Westwood, Needham, Canton, Newton, Weston, or Wellesley and are looking to do a landscape renovation project.

How to Prepare Your Lawn Now to be Summer-Ready!

Leave the struggles of keeping your lawn green all year behind. Start preparing your lawn now for those tough summer months when the true strength of your lawn will really show. It is time to make your lawn great again!

We all know everyone wishes that they could have a lush green lawn all year long. Then midsummer rolls around and your grass fights a losing battle to the intense heat and lack of rain.

Your grass then begins to fade from green to brown and you wonder what you could have done to better prepare your lawn for the year ahead. Follow these lawn care treatment tips and you will be on your way to having a stronger, fuller lawn that will stay green even in the dog days of Summer!

Lawn Maintenance Tip #1: Dethatch

Thatch is a thick layer of organic matter that accumulates at the base of grasses. In order to give the roots of your lawn room to breathe and grow, remove excess thatch buildup through dethatching.

This process also allows for fertilizers to be better received by the roots of the grass since the fertilizer can come in direct contact with the soil at the base of the grass rather than sitting on top of the thatch layer.

Lawn Maintenance Tip #2: Aerate

Everytime your lawn sees foot traffic or the lawnmower, the soil becomes more and more compacted. Excessive compaction reduces the airspace required for healthy soil to function and for plants to optimally grow, causing thin, stressed turf that is susceptible to weeds, diseases and pests.

In order to remedy this problem, Land Design Associates offers aeration as part of its lawncare-maintenance services throughout Norfolk County, which pulls plugs from your lawn to open up airspace for the lawn’s roots.

Lawn Maintenance Tip #3: Apply Lime

Grass is the strongest when rooted in soil that has a neutral PH. If the soil is too acidic then your grass will not be performing at its peak. In order to lower the acidity of soil and bring the PH back to neutral it is necessary to apply lime to your lawn. After all, your grass can not grow at its best if the soil it is rooted in is harming it. Acidic soil just may be the “root” of your problem.

Lawn Maintenance Tip #4: Overseed

If your lawn is looking thin and bare then it may need a little “pick me up” with overseeding.

Overseeding is done through the use of a specialized machine that cuts grooves into the soil and drops the grass seeds inside. This method ensures much better soil to seed contact which in turn leads to better germination rates and a fuller lawn for the customer.

Bare spots become a thing of the past with overseeding.

Lawn Maintenance Tip #5: Fertilize

Depending upon the specific problems that your lawn shows, treatment can be possible through the application of either organic or chemical fertilizers.

Our lawn care experts will determine if your lawn could benefit from fertilizers. If so, they will use their expertise to formulate a recipe that your lawn will love. Fertilizers have the ability to speed up the eradication of lawn problems in order to bring it back to full health.

Lawn Maintenance Tip #6: Consult an Expert

Save yourself, let an expert do the dirty work. Lawn care experts have seen all kinds of problems, and chances are they know exactly how to deal with your lawns’ as well. Hiring a lawn care professional ensures that your lawn gets the treatment it needs. Not only will you save time, but also money. Your problem will get solved the first time, no need to guess about the treatment plan when a professional has got you covered.

Even though a DIY landscape seems like it’d be a fairly simple project (who doesn’t love spending time in the garden?), transforming a landscape on your own may not be the best use of your time and money.

Before you pull the trigger on your DIY yard, think about these other 5 valuable things a landscaper could add to your project:

1- Determine the ‘flow’ of your landscape

Designing your landscape for optimal functionality that suits your specific needs and home design.

Determining the best locations for hardscapes, pools, sheds, walkways, driveways and more.

Optimizing the use of your property by understanding spatial relationships to configure how all of the landscape elements will ‘connect’.

Making sense of it all – creating a cohesive master plan that will look great for years to come.

2 – Add their specialized experience and landscape knowledge to your vision

Having a professional knowledge of plant material helps landscapers select the proper plantings for the right place. This removes the possibility of expensive plants not surviving.

Increasing the longevity of plants and decreasing the amount of maintenance required—low maintenance landscapes look great all year with little upkeep!

Selecting hardscape materials for what will work best in your plan (for instance, many types and styles of stone and pavers are available for a patio and not all types of stone or pavers are suited to every situation). A designer can help you narrow your choices for what works for you.

Knowing the local climate and seasonal weather patterns prevents problems down the line.
